I wonder how many of the new red wall Conservatives will be voted back in next time, judging by how twitchy they have become they are already beginning to wonder if Johnson is the right man

They are leading in the polls because of the “failings” of the tories not because of anything they are doing themsleves- and if Starmer can’t win a debate coming from his previous role, where just he gets facts and figures together then there is no hope for him - it doesn’t make him a great political leader. I’ve just listened to Lisa Nandy who represents my neck of the woods, all criticism but no answers.
Good Lord yes - how I wish Corbyn was the leader during this pandemic

Lisa Nandy was on the today programme this morning talking about the £60m - she said at 4:30 the £60m was off the table but miraculously appeared overnight. Hancock said at 7pm yesterday in parliament that the £60m was still on the table. She failed to admit that this was the case - this is a leading shadow minister!!

| Was it not Johnson who said it wasn’t despite being given many opportunities to do so. I suppose like many times in the past another minister needs to correct the confusion unnecessarily caused by his lack of preparation.

| At a time when we have needed urgent action by governments I'd rather take my chances with a party which believed in the power of government to do things rather than one which throws billions away to either their friends or to companies which specialise in profiteering from bloated government contracts.
And at a time when understanding and interpreting the science is critical, I'd rather not take my chances with a party which has a strong recent history of science denial.
It's no coincidence that the results in countries with hard right populist wannabe strong men in power have seen the worst results during this.

The problem is the science isn't clear - and you can't ignore the economic impact - this isn't China.
The public sector has thrown billions away on many projects e.g. The NHS computerisation of records being one so its not a public vs private. Track and trace only works if you get total buy in from the public - we know in this country it will not happen unless it is forced which we all know wont happen.

Hilarious again Sal, China's economy is one of the fastest growing economies on the planet. I dont think that you can suggest that they ignore economic impact.
As for throwing money away, our current government are exceeding in this area, plunging the country's debt to unprecedented peace time levels.
As for the public "buying in" to track and trace, perhaps if we'd had a "World Beating" system, not only would the public have bought into it but, it might have actually worked ??

| I was sent a message saying I had been near someone who tested positive, the problem was I was not in the U.K. and the system did not work. It turned out I was a victim of the fat fingers scandal.

China is a huge economy - they can lockdown 60m people and it would have very limited impact on its economy - again your desire to get at the government impairs your ability to have a rational debate
Not sure what else the government can do - are you suggesting the investment in the furlough etc was a bad thing?
The track and trace would work much better if everyone was more compliant that is pretty obvious. If you really want to bring business to its knees then track and trace is the way.

Even Boris "liar" Johnson is acknowledging that his "world beating" system needs to improve before we can move forward.
Perhaps if they had worked harder on getting it right before their premature proclamation, we may not have been in quite the mess that we are currently in.
Maybe we should have delayed the return to University too

I agree in respect of a more robust tracking system - we appear to have got past the testing issues.
Whenever you would have sent kids back to university this was going to happen - all you would have done is have the same situation in later down the line. The longer you delayed the greater the impact as winter sets in? Leeds the infection rate is now declining as the students get back to normality
If people wont give correct contact details, wont download the app etc the trace system is completely impotent. Business will suffer serious issues if those told to self isolate with no symptoms can't get a test - its crazy.

The rate is falling in Leeds due to your tier 3 status ??
A delayed / staged return would definitely have been the better option, although this would have caused some issues with student accommodation and more precisely, who picked up the tab for the rental on empty property.

It seems we are in the same "league" after all. The point still stands though.

The spike in cases in Leeds was in areas mostly occupied by students e.g. central, Hyde Park it is no surprise two weeks later the rate is falling and hospital admissions have remained stable. Leeds centre was already very quiet so tier 2 has had very limited impact on reducing the virus as there has been tiny changes in behaviour

| I would now question whether the expensive privatised testing system is even safe. I went for a drive in test in a supermarket car park a few months ago and was not asked about medication I was on. Got the usual nose and throat swabs, Yesterday went to an exercise class run by NHS staff. In view of medications some of us were on, they only swabbed our throats as they said nasal swabs were potentially too risky in a sports centre setting, without medical backup.

| I read yesterday that Boris’ latest ‘Moonshot’ testing programme is going to cost a staggering £43 billion, being more than annual transport and policing budgets combined (although that was on Twitter, so the figure may be suspect). As things stand, it will apparently be a waste of money as only c. 5 per cent of people with positive tests are isolating. If true, the whole thing is dangerous farce that will be used as a basis for cutting all public services in future.
