There is a delightful little spot called The Lobster Pot in the town, they serve monosodium glutomate in various guises.
To be serious, there are lots of decent places to eat on and around Albert Dock and just up the road around the Liverpool One area. They are not cheap, so if it's on expenses you might fancy a try. We have tried the Brasco Lounge (had Tapas) and an Indian called EastZEast (Punjabi cooking) which were nice, but the Brasco did have a few families (hence kids) in at the time.

Not sure where the convention centre is, but in the centre of town (opposite the bombed out church) is "Zorbas". It's an old fashioned Greek restaurant that does not look that exciting but I really like it. The food is pretty good and good value. Greek food is one of those cuisines I do not like to eat regularly (maybe twice a year) but always love it when I do. I'll see if they have a website and add it.
EDIT: This is it:
zorbasrestaurant.wordpress.com/about/
Tripadvisor:
www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant ... gland.html
Reviews generally very favourable. Less favourable ones too - but if you accept what I said about being old fashioned and are not a snob, I think it's good (and I have eaten out an awful lot more times than the average tripadvisor reviewer and in many expensive places).
PS Just had a look through the top few pages of Tripadvisor reviews - all the bad ones are from people who have only posted a few reviews and presumably only consider something decent if its treb=ndy and glitzy. The good reviews are generally from people who have posted lots of reviews and therefore, in my opinion, are likely to take a more balanced view rather than being taken in by the latest thing.

| 60 Hope Street (try bistro downstairs)
London Carriage Works
Fraiche (10 mins in a taxi over the river) quite pricey but very good owner cooked food and service
Delifonseca
Puschka (one of my fave Liverpool restos)
You may also like the very informal Lunya. They don't do lobscouse but Catalan scouse instead

Don't know the others, but would definitely recommend Delifonseca on Stanley St

(Ps) there is a cracking, cheap 24 hour greasy spoon by Lime Street station.

| Take a look at Alma de Cuba. Its in an old Polish Catholic church and have kept a lot of its character inside with a modern feel.
Food great and they have music and carnival nights in there too.

| I've had a look online, but it seemed that there would be a number of people here who have personal knowledge of the topic, so it seemed worthwhile asking.

And if you take a cab, or the 20 minute walk to Maggie Mays, worthwhile indeed it will have been ![Very Happy icon_biggrin.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_biggrin.gif)

I particularly do fancy that. I had a lobskause in Germany in April, and it would be faqscinating to have one in Liverpool and compare.

Oh, I imagine that there are many women, particularly of a certain generation, who would do a wondrous job.
But since that's unlikely to happen, it's down to a restaurant.
I'm fascinated by the history of the dish. It was originally from Sacndinavia and was a sailors' dish, was carried around the Baltic and points beyond by seamen - hence its place in Liverpudlian culture. But it's like so many other aspects of culture, in that it illustrates the overlaps and external influences that create any supposedly single culture.
I have a recipe in a book of Lancashire cookery, so I know it is (or can be) very different. The Baltic version, so to speak, is made of pickled meats (or corned beef), which was it was so much used by seamen, and that's mixed with grated beet root and usually served with a fried egg on top.
In Lübeck, I had it in a restaurant that has been the local seamen's guild home since the 1500s, and it would nice to take that knowledge and experience further.
And in general anyway, local cuisines are fascinating.

| Very good programme on tv a couple years ago that featured lobscouse, Andrew Hussey if I remember presented it - the north on a plate I think. One of the episodes included pie eating competition in Wigan.

| The Potteries also has a version of lobscouse, simply called 'lobby'. Family feuds would break out over who made the best lobby. Personally I could never fathom how anyone could enthuse over a foodstuff that had been named after an outside [is[/ihithouse

I'd seriously question those origins.
Liverpool and Hull share many similarities: dialect, both are ports, both had a high proportion of immigrants (usually sailors jumping ship). Hull has a historic Scandinavian and Baltic population but I've never seen anything that remotely resembles lobscouse being served.

Aye, but no-one is saying that lobscouse became universal in seaports, just that that was probably how it spread to the places you now find it.
Besides, 'ull is in Yorkshire, where better food was more readily available than West of the Pennines. ![Wink icon_wink.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_wink.gif)
