| Anyone had any bad experiences of Curry's (or DSG generally) customer service?
I am living through one of their customer service experiences at the moment. Words fail me. Judging by the internet my experience seems far from rare.

| Currys and Comet are/were both awful in terms of customer service as well as over priced, best to use the stores to view the products (if it's something you need to view beforehand) then order it cheaper online. You'd have likely got better customer service too.

You'll find that a lot of the internet retailers have poor customer service at times too. The reason why you hear a lot about it from Comet/Currys is because they have a larger customer base. Personally, I'd never buy from amazon or Argos. I've had horrible experiences with them.

| I get almost everything from Amazon, and have never had any problems with them. When my Kindle failed, they even sent the replacement out without waiting for the faulty one back.
The concerns I would have with Argos, Comet and Currys would be how long they will be in business to honour your guarantee.

| Same group I believe, but I had a great experience in PC World yesterday, a young girl asked me what I wanted, spent half an hour locating the item from other branches, was polite and smiley all the way through. She even whispered to me that I could get an extended warranty cheaper elswhere as theirs was expensive and more get outs clauses than a Lib Dem election pledge.

| Sounds obvious when you think about it, but I have not yet had a bad experience using any of the "official" businesses that trade on eBay when purchasing a range of small white goods, have never bought a fridge or anything but I am considering buying a three piece suite this way after xmas.
The reason is very simple - eBay traders value and jealously guard their feedback scores, if you have a problem and tell them first then they tend to do anything they can to stop you giving them bad feedback.
Choose your trader well, choose a UK one with plenty of feedback and an official eBay creditation and you won't go far wrong.

| Every retailer has their horror stories.
I've returned lots of thing to Argos, Currys and Comet in the last few months and all have been fairly reasonable.
I get the feeling Dally puts peoples backs up, be nice to them and you get a lot further.

| I deeply regretted letting my laptop disappear for over 2 weeks in the Knowhow set-up having been told in the store it would be 4 or 5 days maximum. I only got any 'status' information by regularly telephoning and in truth I got a different story each time.

I suggest you take a closer look at this "six year rule". It is not, never was and never will be the same as an extended warranty

Yep. There is no such thing as a 6 year rule.
As for Curry's. It's not a horror story, more an irritation. Went in with my mum & dad looking for a fridge-freezer for them, the guy who offers to help seems to know nothing about any of them and simply repeats what is written on the labels and is more bothered about talking about my iphone and how they're better than blackberry's, this despite its only 15 mins before the store closes. Needless to say my parents didn't buy from there, they bought from M&S online and received fantastic service.
Another irritation this time with Comet, a couple of years ago I bought a new TV, Home Cinema System and TV stand, totalling around £700. Maybe not the sale of the century but to me it's a lot of money. Again not long till closing, the assistant spends 15-20 mins attempting to sign me up for various extended warranties, then gets snotty when I ask him for advice on how I'd cable it all up along with a Sky+ box and DVD recorder at home, then is virtually shoving me out the door because it's 7:59pm and the store closes at 8pm. Needless to say I didn't go back to Comet.
Maybe not the worst stories ever but it's made me determined to shop elsewhere than Comet or Currys.

Yes there is.
I got compensation off Dixons after three years (well out of Guarantee and no extended warranty) when the power supply failed on a Panasonic TV because it fell into the category of not being of "satisfactory quality" in that it is entirely reasonable to expect a modern TV to last longer than three years without going bust.
You can claim this sort of thing for up to six years and its part of the Sales of Goods act legislation.
Interestingly Panasonic didn't want to know other than offering a small amount (£50 if I recall correctly) toward the cost of repair which they paid directly to the repair shop. The compensation off Dixon's was enough to buy a similar spec replacement TV. That is now in the lounge and the old one, repaired, is now on the wall in one of my son's bedrooms.

The regulation refers to what is "reasonable". There is no such thing as a "12 month warranty", "6 year rule" or "two year EU rule". What is reasonable is open to interpretation but SOGA suggests that the liability of a retailer / manufacturer could extend up to six years. You wouldn't expect a Fiat Panda to last as long as a Rolls Royce - and that is reflected in SOGA.

Yep. People think the 6 year thing is a hard and fast rule that applies to everything and it isn't, as you say it's what is reasonable. For instance you'd be unlikely to get a refund if you bought a cheap phone for 15 quid and it stopped working 5 years later.

I'm not surprised these places are going bust. So the TV was fixed and you received compensation enough to purchase a replacement?? What's wrong with apologising, fixing the thing and leaving it at that? Was your family's life devastated by the loss of your TV for a short time that it warranted presumably several hundred pounds in compensation? Complex electrical items will occasionally suffer faults, why is a repair not sufficient?
That's not a dig at you - of course you take what you can get, but it just seems insane.

Pretty much all warranties, at least in part, stand or fall on interpretation of what is "reasonable". So, in the automotive trade it is quite normal to see the term "fair wear and tear" included in the terms and conditions of any guarantee, with the dealer (or civil courts) adjudicating on what constitutes as "fair".
I agree that it would be wrong to equate SOGA with a manufacturer's warranty. But this [udoes not[/u invalidate the claim that there is a legislative framework (or "rule"icon_wink.gif which gives consumers the right to pursue remuneration years past the conclusion of standard warranty. Downplaying the chances of a successful claim is simply playing into the hands of manufacturers who have been screwing consumers royally for years. If anything we should be hyping them up!

I always go to these guys www.pennineplus.com/
I usually find independent businesses that have been around for years and are recommended by the locals are a better bet. You get service from people who know their stuff and who seem to genuinely care about the job and the customer. You can also get things like same day delivery, set up and taking your old stuff away for next to nowt.
Wouldn't touch the likes of Currys with a bargepole.

| Been shopping for a built-in oven today (yes, I know, I like to spoil her at christmas), we tried, just for old times sake, a local branch of Comet that closes on Monday and has a give-away sale of the last of their stock - nothing took our fancy but they were literally giving some of the stuff away, for a few quid.
Currys was next door so we tried there - now this is one place that I expected to be booming with their neighbour going bust but the range of built-in cookers that they had was limited to four or five and all of those were being sold as cooker and hob separates as a boxed set "deal", you couldn't buy yhtem individually, the wife even suggested that we take a package deal and have a gas hob as "a spare" - who the fook keeps a spare hob unit just in case ?
We ended up at a local electrical good retailer, literally a one-shop individual trader and it was a pleasure doing business with him/her (husband and wife team), the cooker that we bought was not any more expensive than the major retailers give or take ten quid or so, and he was happy to barter, more importantly he had the one in the shop that we wanted and could deliver personally on Weds, I asked him how much the display model was, knocked £50 quid off and we both ragged it out of the wall and carried it to my car - like doing business in the old days
He'll get my business in future.

| Curry's - we bought a washing machine on Saturday for delivery and installation (which we paid extra for) on Sunday. They turned uo as planned Sunday morning. So far so good. There was a problem in getting the old machine out. I got it out by Sunday lunchtime so I 'phoned them to see if they could come back later. They said they'd come Monday, which was fair enough. So, Mrs Dally took the day off (she currently working, but only paid when she turnes up). they came, had a bash and gave up as this job apparently needed their "integrated kitchen team." I 'phoned up monday night to confirm they had been booked to come on Tuesday. They had. I also made it clear they need to send someone from their "integrated...". They assured me they'd told the depot and even put me on hold whilst allegedly telling them. Tuesday, they come again and say we need their integrated kitchen team. Mrs Dally has now taken two days off. She said they were supposed to be said team. Then she's told we may need to pay more for them to come! This despite no questions being asked when paying for the installation. They said they'd book it. I 'phoned to check Tuesday night that we'd been booked in for Wednesday. Yes we had they said. So Mrs Dally took a third day off. They did not come at all! So she 'phoned up a third party who came early in the morning so she could go to work. So we paid £537 for the machine, delivery and installation. Curry's have breached the contract and in the process it will have cost us another £500 due to their incomptence and complete disregard for customer service. Also they left our dishwasher half out during their useless fumblings.
Never, ever use these clowns. Like so many big company's these days they make it impossible to contact them. I did manage to find a number for head office via the investors section of their website. But even that went to a secretary's answer-machine! Luckily head office is only a short drive away and so if they wind me up any further I'll be round there!
