| Hi,
Looking at selling my car, what sites would people reccommemd? Thinking Gumtree and Auto Trader unless people can suggest anything better?

| Get a couple of page 3 models posing for a picture with the car. Then sell the car to a naïve lad who’s just passed their test at 17 by telling them that this car attracts fit birds..

| If you want a reasonable appreciation of your car's value, just put the details into webuyanycar.com
If you then double their valuation, you won't be far from the correct figure

| Ignore grumpy pants up there.
Autotrader, gumtree etc are great, though autotrader isn't cheap if you don't sell quickly. But despite my reservations, I found webuyanycar to be excellent.
Depends on your motor and circumstances. I got an ok estimate online and booked to see them. They took a good look, noted any imperfections and/or required work and made me a final offer, I was extremely pleased. It was very quick and easy and the cash was in my bank within a day. For me, far better than faffing around getting work done, taking pictures, messing about online and dealing with tyre-kickers or agencies. And the sale was guaranteed and safe.
You might not quite end up with as much as if you sold privately but factor in costs and there's probably not much difference.

| webuyanycar.com managed to come up with value of £3,160 for a '56 plate Passat Sport 2.0 TDi 4motion estate. Just slightly over 50% of book.

As I said, depends on the individual car. Mine was worth £4,500 if in perfect condition sold privately, but needed a fair bit of body work, 2 tyres, alloys were pretty chewed, tax and MOT, plus it had a horribly loud steel exhaust I'd got on the cheap. I got £3,800, which is much better then buggering around getting all that sorted, and then messing around advertising - not the mention the costs involved.
Fact is, they were based at Carcraft and while I'd never use Carcraft to buy, they've got the facilities to sort out all those minor niggles in no time and for minimal cost and hence make me what was a very fair offer.
Also, they don't hold to the online quote, they do a full assessment on site; my online quote was lower then my final amount.

| I have priced it on webuyanycar and they would offer £3300, it says on parkers that i should be asking for around £4700 and seen as though it has zero damage on the car, i want to avoid getting £3300 if possible!

| Webuyanycar is a joke. I have a 59 plate 1.2 clio dynamique (pretty nice spec think Fiesta Zetec or Polo SE) with 11k on the clock and they just showed me 3900!! what?! haha
Also a good bet is eBay classifieds. They work like Auto trader but are cheaper (not a bid btw though you could try that. just make sure theres a disclaimer that you can pull the auction anytime due to it being advertised elsewhere)

| If you use a company called CarArena.co.uk, you should get a much better valuation than from webuyandycar etc.
I think they advertise your car's details to a network of possible buyers, so you are not just stuck with one offer.

Try these people, I know 2 people who have sold cars to them and both got very fair prices (in fact one of them got £200 more than he was going to advertise it privately for). They're based in Hull I think....

| I've always thought that if you're trying to sell a car for less than £1k, put it in a local paper, otherwise stick it on Pistonheads or Autotrader.

On what basis is the country's biggest buyer of cars a "joke"? You may hate them, but as they are the sellers' choice, and their website says they've valued nearly 30m cars, your comment just makes you sound foolish. Personally we sold the wife's old Vectra diesel through them and got within £750 of book. Add in the value of:
* 'instant cash'
* no advertising costs
* no delays
* no time spent on a stream of various timewasters, dealers and dodgy individuals all knowing where you live
*no recourse to you by the buyer if the thing breaks down
...and anyone who can't see the attraction must be wearing blinkers and a blindfold.
Sure you [imay[/i be able to extract more money if you are able and willing to go through the aggro and delays of a personal sale. But if this lot (or any of their competitors) don't offer you a price you think is fair -then don't accept it, simple as!

Thats pretty much my attitude, coupled with the fact that far too many put far too much faith in the various "price guides" that tell them that their seven year old Astra is worth £xxxx, far too many of those who read those guides instantly assume that their seven year old Astra is worth the top "book price" whereas in reality they have an incomplete service record (or no records at all), no receipts as proof of major works completed, scratches and dents all over the wheels and bodywork, a boot full of dog hairs and a drivers seat with a well deep enough in it to hold water.
Your car is worth what someone else will pay for it and still give them a decent enough margin to sell it on bearing in mind that they want to sell it on tomorrow, not leave it on their car lot or grass verge outside their house for six months, your car is their £500 wage next week.

That is just exactly the other point I forgot to list. WBAC [iet al [/iBUY your car so they can immediately look to SELL it at a PROFIT. Which bit of that is so hard for some people to understand? "They wouldn't give me the full book price in Parker or Glasses". No shiit, Sherlock. What did you think, they were a registered charity, performing a valuable public service? Or that having paid you full whack, they have some captive cabal of mentally deficient billionaire buyers who will guarantee to pay them [iover [/i book price for hundreds of thousands of cars?.
The more I think about it, the crazier these folk seem.

| As has been said, Parkers and Glass's offer price [iguides[/i, nothing else.
Ask them if they want to pay the full 'book price' for your car!
Of course, car-buying companies do typically pay less for your car, but the trade-off is that they save you an awful lot of time, convenience and hidden advertising costs whilst sparing you from the dreaded 'tyre-kickers'.
[urlhttp://www.cararena.co.uk/[/url is the best I have found, because you get more offers to choose from.

Stick to what you know and listen to someone who has had many years experience of buying & selling vehicles.
No one has even suggested getting full retail price from any on-line car purchasers, nor do I think anyone has a problem with such purchasers making a profit, it's how the world works.
My problem was that their on-line valuation of my car was so far out, it was laughable. So do yourself a favour and stop making things up.

| I sold my S2000 for £3.2k to WBAC could have got 6k according to guides but needed to get rid quick.
Happy really, i was originally quoted 3.6k but they found problems that to be fair would have cost about £600 to fix anyway.

Do they do anything particular more or less than any buyers or sellers of cars do? The article presupposes that there are some generous, benevolent car buyers out there who will insist on offering you top dollar, despite your protestations. This seems unrealistic to me.
If I was buying, and the guy turned out not to have a FSH, or only one key, or two of the tyres were well worn, I'd be getting money knocked off for those, or trying to. Wouldn't anyone?
The battle between the average private car buyer or seller on the one hand, and a professional dealer or experienced trade seller/buyer on the other, is not a fair fight, and it is just surprising how many people seem to have this naive view that tactics to get the best deal are in some way a shock. Is it unfair that the seller tries to hold out for the best sale price, by accentuating the positives?
Given that it isn't hard to know that a giant seller must make enough money to not only operate a national business but advertise it extensively as well, it is obvious they're not goong to give you the best price, even before you start. Isn't it? I would suggest that most people who use them don't expect to get top dollar, and are prepared to take a hit on price for speed, convenience and lack of aggro. A total non-story.

| Hi people buying a car and foun a cat d write off, said it was a headlight and wing, would other impotent parts like chassis engine rad etc be damaged or is a cat d just cosmetic look?
You don't need a check either on the cat d, but he repaired it and just put it through a mot which passed , obviously it is cheaper then most models but would you people touch a cat d write off?
Thanks andy
