Have you noticed the nature of other national anthems? They generally glory in the diversity and richness of the country in question. Compare that with ours which is entirely about one woman and doesn't mention anything at all about the actual UK.
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.
O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen.
Now I personally feel uncomfortable, and frankly a bit daft, singing about one woman when what I want to do is sing about the multitude of aspects of the UK I love. I started a facebook page yesterday to try and gauge if anyone else gives a toss or is it just me?

No sound on this computer. Will listen tonight. Thanks.
Do you think it would it be rousing enough for a deciding Test against Australia?

| Quote Ferocious Aardvark="Ferocious Aardvark"but if you'd had less beer, or brought an alarm clock ... ?
We are both subjects and citizens, but in fact Parliament and the law reign supreme. You need to face the facts as in the 21st century, this is how in reality it works. Oh and our constitution is just fine (I know, - part of my degree was Constitutional Law) and in a global perspective, I don't perceive British citizens as being comparatively short of rights.
The Queen also, for instance, prosecutes every criminal. I've never seen her in court, though.
And I can't for the life of me think how the national anthem helps perpetuate anything.
well that's fair enough!'"
I'm sure someone else, who's had your level of education would argue differently about the constitution and our rights but just say we elected a government whose manifesto promise was to get rid of the monarchy, house of lords and redistribute the 95% of wealth owned by 5% of the population to the proles and the Queen said you can go and do one? After the legal niceties had been exhausted, who would the Armed forces and police support do you think? Especially in view of the fact that they swear allegiance to the Queen and her ministers.

As a civil servant I also work for the crown. That doesn't mean that come the revolution her maj can automatically count on my support.

| No complaints about the lyrics when belted out from the Southstand last night, it's the passion behind the words that are important

| So I was watching the game, and I didn't really care who won to begin with but as it turned into more of a game I started rooting for Leeds. There was one passage of play where I felt if Leeds had scored I might even have jumped off the couch with my arms in the air. And then the Leeds fans spontaneously as one sang the national anthem, and suddenly I was rooting for Manly. Maybe you had to be there.
