They want to claim possession of the word "marriage", they want to put their own very closeted definition to the word, feel absolutely threatened by non-christians claiming the right to use the word, let them have it - I'd take a guess at the stats and say more people, straight or gay, are legally joined in a union outside of a church than inside one these days and probably most of them don't use a religious minister to do it, so bollox to them, they are a minority already, let them become an even smaller minority and stay as bigoted as they like, its a free world - or at least this bit of it is and their bit is only as free as their story book will allow.
I've heard some good arguments for marriage being reserved for religious unions and something else for the non religious. However I find the term civil union or partnership a bit sterile and like being able to describe myself as married. If society as a whole wants use the word marriage as the formal term for people who wish to formalise their partnership then, society should use that word and if the church doesn't like it, tough. I'm not sure I would want force churches into marrying gay people however.
Interestingly, John Sentamu doesn't appear appear to know who the head of state is, especially when she is his boss.
