Weird feeling coming away from the game tonight. We lost, were on the back foot for a lot of the game, getting pummeled when we had the ball and made umpteen errors, yet we could've won the game and I was pretty happy. We hung in there and I don't think KR will feel great about themselves after that.
If we can get Nsemba, French and Thompson back in and finally find some momentum, that sort of KR performance won't beat us if there is a next time. The league feels more wide open than ever tonight. I think all of Leeds, Saints and Leigh would think they could mix it at that level.
Looking forward to the next few weeks.
With all due respect Wigan barely strung an attack together all game and apart from the hit and hoof that led to the try they never looked like scoring.
KR came with a plan and played well within themselves to beat Wigan they had plenty of players missing too let’s be fair about it French maybe back Nsemba should be back but what if Thompson? How long before he’s back we are in the run in now and if this form carries on they’ll be lucky to hold on to second place it’s far to easy to say get those players back and the pixie dust will sprinkle and all will be well it may be the issues perhaps runs little deeper?
HKR had May and McIlorum missing, who would get in to their 17 now (Gildart won't). I'd have May as about the 10th best half in the comp and McIlorum isn't the force he was but is a solid player. Wigan had the leagues best player missing, the leagues best second rower, when in form and in Thompson, a guy who if not the best prop in the league, is right up in the top 2 or 3.
HKR have been rolling everyone, yet scored one try against Wigan and that was a Wigan side not just missing those players mentioned but also lacking form/confidence and playing as poorly as you could imagine with the ball and yet, we could've won the game. Now you can look at that two ways and one is to say it just continues and we play that poorly again, even with those players back in but I tend to think we get those guys back and I've no doubt we don't play that badly again with the ball. If we cut out the errors with the ball, show that determination in defence again and finally build some momentum, we'll be ok. I get it's been frustrating and weeks are ticking by but there is time yet.
Taking us out the equation for a minute and if we don't win it, I don't think HKR will win the Grand Final either and it'll be one of Saints or Leeds. I've seen enough in the Cup Final and on Friday to feel pretty confident in that. They're a good side but when the effort and energy levels in games are equal and the stakes are high, they seem to clam up and don't look free enough. They were lucky to win the cup final and while they were absolutely in no way lucky to win on Friday, they should've put the cleaners through a Wigan side making that many errors and missing some of their best players.
