Posted by Number 2 on May 24 2008 - 08:43:19

Two More
After getting back on the horse against Wakefield last week the Rhinos travelled to the Grattan Stadium, Odsal looking to go top of the Reserve Grade Championship with rivals St Helens not due to play until Saturday.

After the game scheduled for Headingley at Easter was called off it was the first meeting between the sides this season and the rivalry is as intense at this level as at first team level.

Rhinos March On

The Rhinos got the perfect start to the game; an error at the opening tackle of the game by the Bulls gave Leeds a scrum on the ten metre line. The ball was moved right and Kallum Watkins sent Ben Jones-Bishop through a huge gap to open the scoring with only 45 seconds on the clock. Three minutes later the Rhinos were in again, Simon Brown and Danny Allan combining and Lee Smith got on the outside of the Bradford cover to go in at the corner. Simon Brown converted both and the Rhinos held an early 12 point advantage.

Bradford got back into the game with 12 minutes on the clock, the Rhinos defence was stretched after defending back to back sets and Neil Cherryholme found George Flanagan on his shoulder to go over by the posts. Karl Wroe added the conversion to narrow the Rhinos lead to 6 points.

That setback only served to inspire the Rhinos as they collected another quick two tries, first Danny Williams stepped his way though the Bradford defence on the last tackle after Ben Kaye’s pass and the Simon Worrall caught the defence on the short side to put Kallum Watkins in at the corner, to maintain the centre’s record of scoring in every Reserve Grade game he’s appeared in this season. Simon Brown converted both to take the Rhinos 24-6 ahead with a quarter of the game gone. The teams traded blows to half time but there was no further addition to the score.

Bradford started the second half building pressure on the Leeds line, knowing they have to score first if they were going to make any comeback into the game but it was a classic Leeds counter attack which took them by surprise. Simon Worrall with a big run from this own line, a quick play the ball allowed Ben Jones-Bishop to get on the outside and Kallum Watkins was on the inside to make it 15 for the season in just 7 appearances. Simon Brown added the conversion to take the Leeds 30-6 ahead.

Bradford didn’t give up and their second half efforts were rewarded with 12 minutes to go when a kick through the Rhinos defence by Colton Wray was touched down in the in-goal by Keith Shackleton. Karl Wroe added his second kick of the game to take the Bulls into double figures.

The Rhinos finished with a bang, with 7 minutes to go an offload from Luke Hardbottle saw Worrall and Kallum Watkins combine to send Jodie Broughton in at the corner. Three minutes later, Broughton collected his second try after some magic from Lee Smith. The winger chipped over the Bulls defensive line and managed to hack the ball forward for Broughton to win the race and just touch down in the in goal. Then on the last play of the game, Gareth Moore went from the base of a scrum on half way again chipped over the top of the defensive line, regathered and fended off the valiant challenge of Vinny Finnigan to touch down. Moore converted one of the tries and Danny Allan added another goal to leave the Rhinos 46-12 winners.

Super performance again from the Rhinos, they have put the defeat at St Helens well and truly behind them as they turn up the heat on the field. Simon Worrall led by example on his return reserve duty. Ben Jones-Bishop continued his good for and the centres Kallum Watkins and Jodie Broughton were strong. A big wrap though for the forwards, although outsized by the Bradford pack, Joe Chandler and Luke Hardbottle stood up to everything that the Bulls threw at them. Danny Williams, playing in the second row, picked up the man of the match award.
