Rhinos Bounce Back
Posted by Number 2 on May 16 2008 - 18:25:15

Opening Try
After losing their 100% record at Knowsley Road last week the Rhinos Reserve Grade looked to bounce back against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at Headingley Carnegie. It was a strong Rhinos side which saw the return of Luke Burgess, Kallum Watkins, Ben Jones-Bishop and Danny Allan from first team duty, while Gareth Moore returned after a spell out with injury.

Rhinos Bounce Back

Leeds opened the scoring with only their second possession of the game, a penalty gave the Rhinos good field position. The ball was moved quickly to the right and Danny Williams went through a stretched Wakefield defence to cross the line. Simon Brown converted to give Leeds an early six point advantage. Wakefield hit back, aided by errors from the Rhinos and only a desperate ankle tap from Jodie Broughton prevented Josh Griffin from replying for the visitors.

The Rhinos extended their lead on 12 minutes, again coming from a repeat set after a good kick from Simon Brown forced a drop out. It was a touch of magic from Danny Allan to break the Wakefield defensive line with a dummy and step off the left foot to go in at the corner, Simon Brown converted to double the Rhinos lead.

Leeds went further ahead in the 25th minutes, an error by Mike Sykes giving Leeds a scrum on the Wakefield 40 metre line, the ball was moved left and Allan found Ben Jones-Bishop arriving into the line on cue and the full back went through a huge hile in the Wakefield defence to cross over. Simon Brown converted and the Rhinos were 18 points to the good.

Wakefield went close when Ben Grundy was held up over the line by some great Rhinos defence but a poor kick form Thomas Wandless was punished. The Rhinos got a roll on Joe Howey powered his was through some poor Wakefield defence and rounded Josh Griffin to go in from 60 metres out. The from the kick off Ben Jones-Bishop fielded the kick off and ghosted through the Wakefield defence oh his own 20, Griffin was again no match and Jones-Bishop claimed his second try of the game. Simon Brown converted both to take the Rhinos 30 points clear.

Leeds were running rampant now and scored for the third consecutive set, Lee Smith and Kallum Watkins with strong runs to take the Rhinos up field before a pass from Allan sent Ben Collins in at the corner. The Rhinos weren't finished there, Allan and Williams combining to send Kallum Watkins in at the corner. Simon Brown was unable to convert either try, the second attempt hitting the post but it sent the Rhinos into half time with a 38-0 lead.

Wakefield made the better start to the second half, catching the Rhinos defence short on the far side with some quick passing before Thomas Wandless provided the telling pass to send Ben Grundy in at the corner. Josh Griffin added an excellent conversion put 6 points on the scoreboard for the visitors. The Wakefield try on spurred the Rhinos to turn up the heat and build pressure on the Wakefield line. Eventually the pressure told in the 62nd minute when a reverse pass from Gareth Moore found Kallum Watkins and he stepped his way through the Wildcats defence to claim his second try of the game. Simon Brown converted and Leeds had restored their half time advantage.

The visitors his straight back at the Rhinos when Ben Grundy claimed his second try of the game after forcing his way over the line with a number of Rhinos defenders trying to stop him. Griffin again added the conversion the take the score to 44-12 in favour of the Rhinos. Two minutes later Grundy completed a hat-trick after a pass from Wandless sent him in at the corner. Griffin was missed his first kick of the evening but the visitors were having much the better of the second half scoring so far.

Leeds again turned up the heat and some strong defence forced a Wakefied turnover deep in their own half a flowing passing move involving Allan, Moore and Jones-Bishop saw Liam Brown send Ben Collins in at the corner his second try of the game. Simon Brown was unable to convert but it edged the Rhinos closer to the fifty point mark. Credit to Wakefield though, they refused to lie down and Mathew Wildie sent Mike Sykes over by the posts. Griffin converted and although the Wilcats trailed 48-22 they were leading the second half 22-12.

A tale of two halves for the Rhinos, a superb performance allowing them to go into half time with a 38 points lead but they dropped off in the second half and allowed Wakefield to control the game at times. It was frustrating at times as the Rhinos dropped too much ball when in decent field position. Stand out performers for the Rhinos were Danny Allan, Ben Jones-Bishop and Kallum Watkins.
