Rhinos First Frenchman for 13 Years
Posted by southstander on April 28 2008 - 15:30:57

On Loan

It has been thirteen years since a Frenchman pulled on a Leeds jersey. It was a time before the Rhinos were born, before Superleague was formed and a time when we were under the stewardship of Dougie Laughton.

This saturday could see the first outing from one of our Gallic friends since Patrick Entat, the midfield general, thrilled us as Eric Anselme arrived at Headingley on loan.

We needed someone to get us through our current injury crisis and Bluey has raided French side Albi to bring the talented twenty-nine year old French international to Headingley.

Read more here...

It is suggested that Eric may get his first outing as soon as saturday, a Leeds debut at the Millennium Stadium against Leeds arech rivals the Bradford Bulls...now there would be something amazing to tell your grand kids.

Anselme is a utility back-row/centre with bags of experience but little exposure to the top level of the game (a couple of seasons in the late nineties with Halifax and a year at Penrith Panthers). McClennan, or his scouts, have obviously seen something in him to bring him to Leeds and he'll be keen to impress and make his 'loan' a more permanent deal. Expect fireworks.

The deal is part of a relationship with Albi that could see us bringing through other players during the year to gain some experience at least at Academy level. Eric is scheduled to return to France towards the end of May to play in the French Cup Final, but Chief Executive Gary Hetherington has suggested that he could well play for the first team on saturday, and if not he will get a run out for the academy.

With Lauiti'iti, Ellis, Bailey, Gibson and Jones-Buchanan all injured it looks like a common sense move to take a look at a player who still has a few years to impress and make a name for himself in Superlague.
