Reserve Grade Championship

14th March 2008

Rhinos Keep 100% Record.

After opening wins over Hull KR and Castleford the Reserve Grade looked to extend their 100% record against Harlequins at the Arthur Miller Stadium. On a chilly afternoon, a decent crowd for the kick off time were treated to a super exhibition of rugby league.

The Rhinos, playing up the slope and into the breeze went ahead in the 9th minute. A big hit from Joe Howey forced thr error and from the resulting scrum Simon Brown found full back Ben Jones-Bishop and he timed his run to perfection to split the defence and get in at the corner. Gareth Moore was unable to add the conversion.

Leeds extended their lead 6 minutes later, after Tom Sheldrake made the initial break to give Leeds field position deep in the 'Quins half, Paul McShane went to the short side and found Kallum Watkins who went in at the corner for his 8th try of the season. Moore was again unable to add the extras but the Rhinos lead was doubled to 8 points.?

Harlequins found themselves futher behind in the 23rd minute, after not finding touch from a penalty Ben Jones-Bishop fielded the ball and went cross field to find Tom Sheldrake. Sheldrake weaved through the defence before finding Chris Clarkson with a perfect pass and the substitute went over from 30 metres out. Moore added his first goal of the afternoon to take the lead to 14-0. Leeds were in again three minutes later, after Liam Brown and Danny Allan went close, McShane long cut out ball from dummy half allowed Sheldrake to get in at the corner. Moore this time unable to add the conversion.

The visitors got on the board 6 minutes before half time, a kick through on the last tackle by Dylan Skee hit the upright and the ball bounced back into the arms of Tom Bold and he went under the posts, the conversion from Dennis Tuffour was successful and pegged the Rhinos lead back to 12 points.

Both teams had further chances to score in the last moments of the half, Ben Jones-Bishop was denied by a last gasp ankle tap. Lamont Bryan managed to outjump Danny Allan in the in-goal and Rob Thomas dropped the ball for the visitors with the line begging after and offload by Matt Carter. It was the Rhinos though, who took an 18-6 lead into the interval.

Leeds extended their lead two minutes into the second half, Chris Clarkson released Gareth Moore upfield, he was held short but a quick play the ball saw Simon Brown feed Mathew Fox to get the score board moving in the second half. Gareth Moore added the extras to take the lead to 24-6. It didn't deter the visitors and they hit back 7 minutes later. Dylan Skee released Lewis Payne and he managed to offload as he was going to ground, the ball was collected by Will Sharp and he got over the line. The kick from Tuffour was waved away and Leeds had conceded 2 tries in a game for the first time this season.

Leeds took the game away from 'Quins with two quick tries, the Rhinos got back to back penalties to get them down field, after going close Paul McShane found Joe Howey and he got over the line. 5 minutes later Hoewy claimed a second try five minute later, after chipping the ball through on his own 20 metre line Gareth Moore just got to the ball in front of Will Sharp and hacked the ball on. Howey then collected and went 40 metres to touch down. Moore added both conversions and Leeds were 36-10 up and the two points were in the bag.

Kallum Watkins claimed a second try in the 64th minute after a good switch of direction from Gareth Moore, then two minutes later the try of the game. The Rhinos went from inside their own twenty, with 5 passes before Simon Brown released Kallum Watkins up the touchline, his super offload found Ben Jones-Bishop and he went through the covering Harlequins defence to go in from half way. Moore added both goals and the Rhinos were 48-10 up.

The Rhinos the finished the game with a flourish, with two more tries. First Luke Hardbottle released Gareth Moore and Joe Howey was on hand to complete his hat-trick, going in from 40 metres. Then Hardbottle and Howey combined to send Gareth Moore in under the posts. Moore added both conversions to take the final score to 60-10 and keep the Rhinos unbeaten. Good performance from a very young Rhinos side, Joe Chandler and Luke Hardbottle laid the platform for Simon Brown and Gareth Moore to create the gaps. Liam Brown continued his good form from last week but the man of the match went to Ben Jones-Bishop.

The reserve grade are back in action next Thursday night when they take on Bradford Bulls at Headingley Carnegie Stadium as the curtain raiser. Kick off is 5.45pm
