That was the closest play-off series ever, apparently. And on the field the action was just as fierce as in the 2007 SouthStander.com Prediction play-offs. After 27 gruelling rounds of pure guessworkery, our top 6 punters faced off against one another in a quest to be crowned champion. |
Here's how it panned out.
The top two - Baby Rhino II, the minor premier, and her sister Baby Rhino 3 - sat out the first round while the others faced elimination battles.
In the first game, SpicyRhino scored a one-point victory over rodhutch while SouthStander.com was slightly more comfortable with a four-point margin.
rodhutch 12-13 SpicyRhino
SouthStander.com 23-19 LJFC Rhino
The sisters argued among themselves for the first place in the Grand Final while SpicyRhino and SouthStander.com fought for survival.
SouthStander.com obviously found four-point winning margins to his liking, while it was the older sister who progressed straight to the final with a narrow victory.
SouthStander.com 11-7 SpicyRhino
Baby Rhino II 7-5 Baby Rhino 3
Welcome to the last chance saloon. Leeds confounded everyone by battering Wigan as opposed to the narrow margins predicted. This time SouthStander.com was on the wrong end of a four-point margin as Baby Rhino 3 set up a rematch with her sister for the honours.
Baby Rhino 3 27-23 SouthStander.com
And so to the big one. Again, the bookies couldn't split the two teams, and our punters were split. Baby Rhino II went for Leeds by 1, Baby Rhino 3 went for Saints by the same margin. As we now know, it wasn't that tight an affair at Old Trafford, and the elder of the two sisters prevails.
Baby Rhino II 29-27 Baby Rhino 3
So a hearty congratulations to Baby Rhino II - minor premier and champion - going one better than last year, and huge commiserations to her little sister. Hope this doesn't cause civil war in the household.
Thanks to everyone for playing. Hope you had fun in between me getting the scores wrong on a semi-regular basis throughout the year.
