David Bywaters Player Appraisal - Saints Away
Posted by southstander on September 30 2007 - 13:58:41

JP Davids MoM
by David Bywater

After a couple of season off, we've once again asked Davidbyw to cast his eye over the Rhinos performances of the weekend and pass numerical judgement on the players.

Bound to be controversial, and to spark debate on the message boards, we'll keep tabs over the season and see if Davids appraisal of player of the season tallies with your Man-of-the-match votes.

Read more here....

Here are Davids thoughts about Fridays away game against St Helens;

1Webb7Competent rather than spectacular - unlucky not to score late in the second half - not asked many questions by the Saints attack though .
2Donald7Little opportunity in a defence dominated game - did what he had to in an efficient manner.
3Toopi8 Huge defensive effort - his tackle count must be near 50 - not surprisingly little chance to shine in attack.
4Senior6Seemed overrawed by the magnitude of the game - dropped ball and impotent when he did keep hold of it - sad demise of a once great player.
5Smith7Like Donald little chance to show his skills - took his try well and kept his error count to a minimum
6McGuire7Big effort in defence and some nice kicks in the second half - difficult to break such a solid defence down with a PTB as slow as Leeds'.
7Burrow7Unlucky with the drop goal - that apart had similar issues to McGuire we need to create room for our half backs to play.
8Leuleui7Not quite the impact on Saints' defence as he has had on other sides - Kylie certainly put the effort in.
9Diskin6His demise was highlighted in the Pryce try - his attempt at a tackle showed all the frailties Matt now has - loss of speed mobility and power - a sad parody of the player he once was.
10Peacock9My MOM - monumental effort, lead from the front with all guns blazing - he could not have given any more on the night.
11Jones-Buchanan6Here-in lies one of the Rhino's problems. Jamie's effort is 100% but his skills are very one dimensional he offers little above his enthusiasm. Leeds need more attacking options from their second rowers and I am not sure Jamie can offer that.
12Ellis7Gareths tackling stint was huge last night but like JJB Gareth offers little in the form of an attacking option.
13Sinfield8Really laid his body on the line and along with Toopi must have topped the tackle count. However his missed penalty in the first half proved crucial in a tight game.
14Lauiti'iti7The green shoots of a recovery of form are appearing - could be the ace in the pack over the next two weeks.
18Kirke6100% effort but like JJB is too one dimensional for a top side at this level. His getting selected would appear to have much to do with attitude rather than skill level
22Ablett7Screams quality - wasted in his current role. Needs to start next week at the expense of Senior or JJB - time for Tony to take a deep breath and give Carl a real chance.
23Tansey6Little game time and as such little chance for influence - unlucky Wellens got the ball before him. The score reflects his limited game time.
