Rhinos Move On

The visitors made the better start to the game, Barry Hamilton denied in the corner by a last ditch tackle by Luke Gale but the vistors kept the pressure up and took the lead in the 11th minute. Lewis Palfrey changing the direction and finding the Rhinos defence short of number before a long cut out pass sent Andy Ballard in at the corner. Ballard converted his try to give the visitors an early 6 point lead.

The Rhinos hit back 5 minutes later, after gaining their first penalty of the evening just out side the Salford twenty Leeds went for six and struck on the first tackle. A run around between Luke Gale and Luke Burgess saw the scrum half run across the Salford defensive line before his pass found Steve Brook who powered his way over. Kyle Briggs converted to level things up.

Salford edged ahead again two minutes later after Luke Burgess was penalised for a high tackle on the 40 metre line. Andy Ballard stepped up to slot the ball through the posts to put the City Reds 8-6 up.

The Rhinos struck next in the 31st decision. They seemed to get the benefit of a call from the official when he ruled a knock on against Ryan Fieldhouse. The Rhinos didn't complain, from the scrum Kyle Briggs went from the base and put in a cross field kick that Ryan Hall collected and he went under the posts. Briggs added the conversion to edge Leeds 12-8 ahead, a lead they would take into the break.

After weathering some heavy Salford pressure it was the Rhinos who struck first in the second half with 8 minutes gone. After some wonderful handling bewteen Luke Gale And Wayne Reittie saw Michael Brown go close. Ben Kaye went from dummy half and somehow touched down with three Salford players around him. Briggs converted to take the lead to 18-8.

Salford hit back in the 66th minute, after a Rhinos error on their own 20, the City Reds went to the short side on the scrum and Jay Walton sent Andy Ballard in at the corner for his second try of the night. Ballard was unable to convert but the Rhinos now led by only 6 points.

Leeds regained the initiative 4 minutes later, after good work down the right hand side by Joe Chandler and Ryan Hall created the field position. Simon Worral went close before Ben Kaye found Michael Haley who crashed over from short range on the last tackle. Briggs converted again to take the Rhinos 24-12 ahead.

Salford again hit back, after regaining the kick off they attacked the Rhinos line, the ball was moved right and Ben Wood slipped a super ball out for Andy Ballard to complete his hat-trick. Lewis Palfrey took over the kicking duties but was unsuccessful to leave Leeds with an 8 point margin. It was extended to 9 points with 4 minutes to go after Luke Gale added a drop goal after a big break from Ben Jones-Bishop got the Rhinos upfield.

From the next set Leeds made the game safe, Luke Gale with the break, after a short Salford kick off fell into Rhino hands, and Luke Burgess was on hand to go in under the posts. Briggs converted to give the Rhinos a 31-16 victory.

Leeds now progress to meet the winners of the Bradford and St Helens game at home next weekend and they will have to improve again if they are to progress to the final eliminator. The returns of Luke Burgess and Simon Worrall bolstered the Rhinos but most impressive of all was Luke Gale who was a clear winner of the man of the match award.
