The Senior Academy travelled to Knowsley Road in their last regular season game. Again it was a very young Rhinos side this time with Chris Clarkson making a debut from the bench.

Rhinos Finish With Defeat

Saints made the brighter start to the game, punishing the Rhinos twice within the first 10 minutes of the game. With three minutes on the clock the ball was moved right and full back Chris Frodsham chimed into the line to get round the Rhinos cover and get in at the corner. Frodsham was injured in the act of scoring the try and was to play no further part in the game and while he was departing Ste Tyrer put his conversion attempt wide.

Six minutes later the home side were in again, after a 40-20 kick gave Saints field position Ste Tyrer was held up short before the ball was moved left by Moore to Eastmond who sent Lee Cunliffe in by the side of the posts. Tyrer this time converted to take Saints 10-0 ahead.

The Rhinos finally struck 17 minutes into the game, on the back of a penalty restart the ball was moved left; Michael Haley’s offload found Kyle Briggs and his long pass allowed Jodie Broughton to go down the wing and score. Briggs missed the conversion to bring the gap down to 6 points.

Saints his back almost immediately, Scott Moore going from dummy half on the 40 and through some poor Rhinos defence around the ruck area before rounding Ben Jones-Bishop to go over by the posts. Tyrer converted to extend the lead to 16-6.

Leeds then hit back again in the 23rd minute, after getting a penalty from the kick off due to obstruction the Rhinos built pressure on the Saints line. They finally got their reward when Simon Brown’s little kick through was pounced on in the in-goal by Michael Brown. After some deliberation by the officials the try was awarded, Briggs added the conversion to bring the Rhinos back to with six points

Tyrer missed an opportunity to extend the lead with a penalty in the 27th minute, but Saints extended their lead just before half time. After the Rhinos failed to find touch with a penalty from deep in their own half Saints piled on the pressure. A kick through from Kyle Eastmond was fumbled by Jodie Broughton and Lee Cunliffe was on hand to collect the ball and claim his second try of the game. Tyrer missed the conversion and to complete the half Kyle Eastmond added a drop goal to take Saints into a 21-10 half time lead.

The teams traded blows in the opening quarter of the second half as the Rhinos looked to find a way back into the game and produce a similar comeback to the one at Odsal the week before. It was Saints though who broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. After the Rhinos conceded a needless penalty on the last tackle to give Saints a repeat set deep in Rhinos territory a kick through from Jamie Ellis evaded the Rhinos cover and Scott Moore pounced on the ball in the in-goal to get his second try of the game. Tyrer converted and it was a long way back for the Rhinos now 17 points in arrears.

Leeds replied 3 minutes later, after an error from the kick off by Saints. Leeds pounded the Saints line with Joe Chandler and Michael Haley going close before Ben Kaye barged his way over from dummy half. Briggs converted and the gap was back to 11 points again.

After Tyrer missed another penalty in the 70th minute Leeds ensured a grandstand finish with three minutes to go when Simon Brown sent Joe Chandler in for his second try of the season. Simon Brown took over the kicking duties and reduced the Saints lead to 27-22.

Sadly it wasn’t to be, as Leeds went from deep looking for the match winning score the ball was turned over on the 20 metre line and two tackles later Saints were in when Kyle Eastmond jinked his way over the line. Tyrer added the conversion to take the final score to 33-22 and the Rhinos ended the regular season with back to back defeats.

Again it was another young Rhinos side and it was the elder and more experienced players who led the way. Kyle Briggs, Michael Haley and Jodie Broughton were prominent in a losing effort. The Rhinos now begin to prepare for the play offs which will hopefully see the return of Luke Burgess, Simon Worrall, Luke Gale and Tom Burton as they begin their attempt to reclaim the title.
