Shared Spoils in Odsal Thriller
Posted by southstander on September 02 2007 - 22:33:42

Two-try

With Saints winning already this weekend, the Rhinos needed to win to keep the pressure for the minor premiership. Bradford, on the other hand, needed the two points to keep alive their hopes of pipping the Rhinos to second place.

With heavy conditions and a greasy ball it looked like being a war of attrition. He who lasted the longest was likely to triumph.

We were in for a nail-biting treat.

We bring you all of the action here......

SLXII - Round 25

Shared Spoils in Odsal Thriller

The rain that had been lashing down all-day across West Yorkshire has subsided before kick-off, but for how long? Leeds started the game attacking towards the supporters from Headingley, but found themselves defending their line early on.

Both sides made early mistakes, notably McKenna who looked on a different planet after taking an early knock, and regular Rhinos sinner Ryan Bailey.

On fourteen, the Bulls made the breakthrough. Solomona had been held up over the line but from the next play Andy Lynch crashed over the line under the sticks through five attempted Leeds tackles. Deacon added the extras for a 6-0 Bulls lead.

On twenty-three Ellis took Deacon out after a kick through and the Bulls scrum-half added the extras himself for 8-0. The Rhinos still really hadn't had the ball in an attacking position.

In the last five minutes of the first half the Rhinos dominated in a way that they hadn't for the other thirty-five. It was only in these last few minutes that we looked anything like scoring as both sides defences bossed the game.

As the second half kicked off we were all praying that the Rhinos would spend more than five minutes attacking.

On forty-five minutes, and just after a dubious penalty against Terry Newton, Matt Diskin crossed the line and had the ball stolen in the act of scoring. Bentham went to the screen and Silverwood awarded a penalty try. Sinfield slotted over the extras and we were right back in it at 6-8.

Super Kick

Leeds made a mistake straight from kick-off and Ben Harris benefitted from a cross-field kick which was collected and passed out by St. Hilaire. Deacon missed the conversion from the touchline and the Bulls were a converted try ahead.

On fifty a Tansey knock-on in his own twenty put the pressure on but a superb last ditch tackle from Jamie Peacock kept the Bulls out. Leeds then went down the other end and an excellent offload by JJB allowed McGuire to put a grubber through for Donald to collect and score in the corner. Sinfield slid the conversion wide but the gap was down to two points.

Penalty Try
On the hour mark, Burrow was fouled in the tackle and Sinfield made an attempt at goal from just over the half-way line. He slid the ball wide but Leeds got the ball back.

On seventy minutes a McGuire kick on the last was knocked backwards by St. Hilaire and Donald collected the loose ball in goal to score his second of the night. The Bulls fans were stunned, the Rhinos supporters elated. Sinfield kicked the goal from the touchline for a 16-12 lead.

On seventy-eight minutes the Bulls kept the ball alive on the last and from a three on one position Evans crossed in the corner. Deacon need the goal for victory and he missed it, sliding the ball across the face of the goals. It was all-level with two minutes to go.

The siren sounded and the game was tied up at 16-16, in the end a fair result. This was a game littered with mistakes and controversial refereeing decisions. In the end we're happy with the draw, it almost certainly secures second spot, bar an absolute disaster against Hull FC and Wakefield. Top spot is still alive, but now we need to be 100% and keep our fingers crossed for a Wigan win at the JJB in the last game of the season.

I just wish Ryan Bailey would stop giving away stupid penalties.
