David Bywaters Player Appraisal - Saints Away
Posted by southstander on July 07 2007 - 14:37:02

Davids MoM
by David Bywater

After a couple of season off, we've once again asked Davidbyw to cast his eye over the Rhinos performances of the weekend and pass numerical judgement on the players.

Bound to be controversial, and to spark debate on the message boards, we'll keep tabs over the season and see if Davids appraisal of player of the season tallies with your Man-of-the-match votes.

Read more here....

Here are Davids thoughts about Friday's away game against St Helens;

No.NameScoreAnalysis
1Webb8Very consistent once again - like all top quality players he does the simple things so well - never looks flustered. Brent must give team mates considerable confidence as the last line of defence.
2Donald7A little quieter than normal hence the mark - once again a try saving tackle on Gardener - I would like to see him trap the ball rather than try and collect it with his hands low down.
3Toopi9 My MOM - monumental defensive effort - Clinton really puts himself about. Unlucky not to score a try a really deserved for his efforts - if there is a pound for pound harder hitter in SL than Clinton I haven't seen it.
4Senior8His best game of the season by far - looked solid ball in hand and the mistake for the Roby try apart had a very good defensive game too.
25Hall8Ryan really stood up to be counted - whilst he showed signs of inexperience can expectedly he also gave glimpses of his potential, solid under the high ball, took the ball up without fear and capped it all off with try - the look on his face after scoring with remain long in the memory.
6McGuire8Much improved - not a surprise for some - his mark reflects the huge defensive effort he put in rather than the attacking danger he provided. Showed his skill with the try - although Pryce's effort at a tackle was pathetic.
7Burrow8Great try at a crucial time - shared the controlling role with Sinfield very well. Despite getting run over more than once got back up and made his share of the tackles
16Bailey8Ryan's best game of the season - maybe competition for places has concentrated Ryan's mind. Lets hope this is the sign of things to come which saw Ryan as a potential GB regular.
9Diskin7Shame about Matt's injury he was really going well in this game. He seems unlucky with injuries - just as he starting to show some form he has taken a serious knock - the score reflects the game time
10Peacock8Huge tackling stint - lost count of the number of tackles Jamie made close to the line. Less impressive in attack - Smith needs to find a way of getting more out of Jamie going forward.
11Jones Buchanan8JJB did what he always does - gives 80 minutes of 100% effort. His willingness to work unselfishly for his team mates should not understimated - whilst not a stand out this win would not have been possible without JJB's contribution
12Ellis8Not as eye catching as in some games this season. Gareth still made a significant impression on the game. I would like to see him develop his offload as appears to always have the ball carrying hand free in the tackle.
13Sinfield9Three big plays in the game - the 40/20, the pass to McGuire and the short pass to Toopi that should have led to a try. The only area of concern is the goal kicking - he missed three conversions which could have been crucial in a tight match - a small point in an otherwise top quality performance
14Lauitiiti8Welcome back - superb cameo. Really made a difference when introduced from the bench - gave the whole team a lift - one or two superb steps and body swerves.
8Leuluai8At last he really put himself about, gave the likes of Mauri and Graham something to think about. Definitely contributed to Graham missing the tackle for Burrow's try - more of the same please next week.
18Kirke7If anything illustrated the team spirit on show it was Ian's Hanibal Lector impression in the second half - at fault for the second Saints try - the mark again reflects the limited game time
23Tansey8Showed his versatility once again covering for Diskin - showed good anticipation for the try. A very useful individual to have on the bench.
