Rhinos Run Riot
Posted by Number 2 on June 17 2007 - 18:26:41

Back from Quins
By Matthew Horton

The Rhinos travelled to the DRAM Centre in Moldgreen to take on a Giants side that only had one win all season, that against Leeds back in February.

The kick off was held up for 45 minutes as their was no Doctor in attendance, not the first time this has happened at Huddersfield either.

Thankfully it didn't have an effect on the lads......

We bring you all of the action here......

Rhinos Run Riot

The delayed start to the game had no effect on the Rhinos, the game as a contest was over inside the first 13 minutes as the Rhinos crossed for 5 unanswered tries, in fact it took the Giants sixteen and half minutes to get ball in hand.

Ryan Hall set the Rhinos on the way in the first set of the game after an super offload from the returning Luke Burgess. Three minutes later Tom Burton buried his way over from dummy half before good build up work from Simon Worrall and Michael Haley sent Luke Gale in for the third Rhinos try. Then Ben Kaye went in from dummy half and a Luke Gale cross kick sat up for Jodie Broughton to take advantage and touch down. Briggs converted four of tries, only missing his first attempt but the Rhinos were 28-0 to the good. It was then a question of how many points would be accumulated.

After the Giants finally got ball in hand, they had no answer to the Rhinos superb defensive effort and turned the ball over. Leeds took the opporunity for three more tries. A long Luke Gale pass gave Ryan Hall his second try of the afternoon on 18 minutes for Briggs to convert.

Huddersfield then tried to get back into the game, a kick through from Steve Shaw sat up for Danny Williams and he set off from the goal line, as the Giants defence closed in he found Jodie Broughton who crossed for his second try of the game after 26 minutes. Then 7 minutes later from a scrum on half way, the Giants defence parted as Gale found Danny Williams to run in untouched. Briggs converted both to take the lead to 46 points.

The Rhinos defence though had one lapse of concentration four minutes from half time, Chris Donlan with the inside pass and Tom Griffiths crossed for the home side. Ryan Heeley converted to give the Giants 6 points for their efforts.

It only spurred the Rhinos on and again they scored from a move at a scrum on the last play of the half. Gale this time finding Mike Ratu who went in from 40 metres out. Briggs converted to take Leeds 52-6 up into the break.

Coach Willie Poching was not a happy man about the try conceded and it spurred the Rhinos onto greater things in the second half as they crossed for another 9 tries. The Rhinos scored from their first set of the second half, Kyle Briggs finding Jodie Broughton who showed great footwork to get in at the corner to complete his hat-trick.

Then there was a ten minute respite for the Giants but there was a steady stream of Rhinos try scorers. Luke Gale grabbed his second after good work form Luke Burgess, then Nick Scruton barged over and then he turned provider alongside Luke Gale to send Michael Brown over.

Jodie Broughton then got his fourth try of the game, Ryan Hall and Wayne Reittie combined to send Steve Brook over. Leeds then returned the kick off, Michael Haley splitting the defence, he found Gale who un turn released Michael Brown. He kicked the ball downfield, it was a race between Williams and Ratu and it was the centre who touched down after Williams had been held back.

The Rhinos only scored twice in the last 10 minutes, firstly after a Huddersfield kick had gone dead in goal a quick restart by Ben Jones-Bishop saw his break through, he found Williams and was on hand to take the return pass to go over. Then on the last play of the game, Luke Burgess made the break and found Luke Gale. He backed himself to get in at the corner to complete his hat-trick and bring up three figures. Kyle Briggs ended up with fifteen goals on the day to give the Rhinos a 102-6 win to leave the crown hunting for the record books.

Superb preformance, it would not be fair to single out anyone in what was a great team perforamce. If I had to pick a man of the match it would have been a close run thing between Luke Burgess, Luke Gale, Kyle Briggs and Nick Scruton.
