Can The Rhinos Cut The Giants Down?
Posted by Number 2 on June 15 2007 - 00:34:54

Sharp point?

By Matthew Horton

The serious business starts here as the Rhinos begin a run of games the can ultimately determine where they finish in this years league ladder.

The game at the Galpharm on Sunday and the break for the Frontline Test Match is followed by Bradford, Saints and Wigan in consecutive weeks.

We preview the game here....

The Rhinos should be refreshed after having their first week off mid season since 2004. Is it an omen, who is to know?

Mike Ratu has been named in the squad for the first time alongside Nick Scruton, who has made an impressive return to Senior Academy action after being laid out with a broken foot. I do though expect those two to be lining up in the Senior Academy game at the DRAM Centre, Moldgreen on Sunday morning.

Matt Diskin is the likely addition to the Rhinos run on side having only played in the cup defeat to Wigan since Millennium Magic. This would seen Ian Kirke out of the side as Kevin Sinfield would drop back to loose forward and Gareth Ellis would push up into the second row.

Huddersfield have had a mixed season so far. They started with 7 straight losses, including a 16-12 reverse at Headingley Carnegie back in Round 4. They broke their duck on Good Friday against Wakefield to embark on a 7 game winning run. The wheels came off at Salford in Round 15, followed by a 9-9 draw at the KC last time out in engage Super League but last weeks bashing by the Bulls at Odsal in the Carnegie Challenge Cup was their biggest defeat of the season so far.

Three Giants to watch;

Thorman

Eorl

Hudson

The Rhinos have only lost once to the Giants in Superleague, a last minute 30-24 defeat in the sweltering heat back in 2003.

The last meeting between the two sides was the Rhinos 16-12 win at Headingley Carnegie, a game played on a bog of a pitch.

Southstander.com Prediction
Rhinos 20 10 Giants

The usual huge Rhinos travelling support will be making the trip down the road, the Giants still have the best defence in the competition so far. This is not going to be an easy afternoon for the Rhinos, the Giants have only conceded over 20 points in a Super League game once all season, that was against the Catalans Dragons in Perpignan.

The forecast is for light drizzle but with the adequate cover provided in the stands it shouldn't pose much of a problem.

The bookies have given the home side a 6 point start on the coupon.

There are just a few more hours to get your predictions in in the tipping competition on the message board.
