Hull Get Their Revenge

It was a much changed Hull side from the one at Headingley Carnegie Stadium three weeks ago when the Rhinos were 62-0 winners, Leeds on the other hand were missing Ryan Hall, Jordan Tansey, Luke Burgess and Carl Ablett from their side.

It was Leeds who dominated the first 10 minutes of the game, with the now traditional Brantingham breeze behind them they dominated field position but it was the home side who struck first. Anthony Thackeray, who was to prove to be a thorn in the Rhinos side all afternoon, creating the opening for Matt Dale to cross out wide, Richard Whithing's conversion attempt falling short in the wind.

It got worse for the Rhinos, Hull had the confidence now and their quick style of play caught the Rhinos on the back foot as Danny Houghton went in under the posts after the Leeds defence parted. Whiting this time adding the conversion to take the Hull lead to 10-0.

Leeds hit back after 21 minutes, the ball was moved to the right and although the pass from Luke Gale wasn't the best, Lee Smith managed to control the ball with his foot. It bounced nicely into his hands and he crossed in the corner. Smith then added the extras to bring the Rhinos to within 4 points.

Hull then took the game away from Leeds in a 7 minutes period with three tries. First it was Horne with the break, he found Anthony Thackeray who sent namesake Ashley in under the posts. Then Anthony Thackeray with an outrageous dummy went through the Leeds line to send Danny Bell in by the posts and then Horne was on Anthony Thackeray's shoulder to get in for another try. Whiting and Horne added a goal each to leave the Rhinos 26-6 down.

The Rhinos didn't give us and managed to strike just before half time, the ball moved left and Kyle Briggs put Tom Burton through the gap, he backed himself and got in at the corner. Smith's conversion attempt was blown away by the wind and the Rhinos went into half time 26-10 down.

Now playing into the wind Leeds desperately needed to get the first score of the second half but Hull hit them with two quick tries within the first 4 minutes of the half. Liam Reed helped himself on the last tackle with the Rhinos defence at sixes and sevens. Then after a break from Steen and Houghton created the field position, the ball was moved right and Jason Sloan had a walk in. Horne missed both conversions to leave Hull FC 34-6 in front.

Again Leeds refused to lie down and five minutes later the crossed the line when Luke Gale and Michael Brown created the gap for Mike Ratu to get over the line, Smith converting superbly from the sideline.

The is only seemed to spur the home side on and after an error from Leeds near their own line Ryan Steen was put through a huge gap to go over untouched from the resulting scrum. Horne converted to take Hull to the 40 point mark.

Again Leeds wouldn't give up as Mike Ratu got his second try of the afternoon, again after good work from Michael Brown in the build up. The kick from Smith was held in the wind to bring the gap down to 40-20 in Hull's favour.

Hull though had they last say with 10 minutes to go when Matt Bower burst through some poor attempted tackling to go over from 40 metres out. Horne converted to give the home side a 46-20 victory.

This could only be classed as a bad day at the office. Leeds were well beaten up front and the lack of big forwards available to Willie Poching must be a worry at the moment. The loaning on Luke Burgess has left a big gap in the pack. Good performances though on the day from Mike Ratu and Michael Haley, and it was he who took the ISC Sponsored SouthStander.com Man of the Match.
