Rhinos Weather Reds Storm

After surviving some early Salford pressure, including defending three sets of six in their own 20 it was the Rhinos who struck first in the 9th minute. After a penalty gave Leeds field position, the ball was moved quickly to the right and Mike Ratu sliced through the defence to go over. Jordan Tansey converted to give the Rhinos an early and undeserved 6 point lead on the balance of the play.

Leeds struck again four minutes later. The field position created by Carl Ablett's super offload to Ben Jones-Bishop, he was held just short of the line but from the play the ball, McShane found Gale and he sliced through the City Reds defence to go over. Tansey converted again to double the Rhinos lead.

Leeds has an amazing escape in the 16th minute, Jason Walton made the break and his inside pass found Lewis Palfrey but Ayden Faal somehow got back to dislodge the ball and save the day and then further disappointment for the City Reds when Luke Adamson was sin binned after a flurry of punches aimed at Carl Ablett.

Leeds were denied twice before half time, first Ayden Faal denied by a forward pass and then a possible second for Mike Ratu after a knock on in the build up. Still the Rhinos went into half time with a 12 point advantage.

Salford again made the better start to the second half and this time their efforts were rewarded in the 49th minute. Poor mistakes and discipline from the Rhinos allowing Salford a foothold in their own half and Luke Adamson crashed over from short range. Andy Ballard converted the try to pull the score back to 12-6.

Leeds then replied on their first visit to the Salford 20 in the second half. An error gave Leeds a scrum on the Salford 10, the ball was moved right and Wayne Reittie sent Mike Ratu in for his second try of the game, Tansey's conversion attempt drifted across the front of the posts to leave Leeds 16-6 in front.

Then a 40-20 from Tansey put Leeds on the front foot again, but the best Leeds got from the situation was forcing a goal line drop out. But pressure told and on the resultant set Leeds went to the shortside and Kyle Briggs found Carl Ablett who went over in the corner with 15 minutes to go. Tansey converted to put Leeds 16 points clear, 22-6 in front.

Leeds sealed the game with 10 minutes left, despite the wet conditions the ball was moved left. Luke Gale chimed into the line and put a little kick through that was colleced by Ryan Hall. Tansey's conversion from the touchline hit the post to put the Rhinos 26-6 ahead.

Salford got the consolation their efforts deserved with 5 minutes left. Stefan Ratchford supplying the pass for Luke Ambler to go over under the posts, Ballard converted to take the score to 26-12.

Super effort from Leeds in the conditions and with a depleted forward pack and call ups to the Yorkshire Origin side. Against a tough Salford team they had to defend their line with great tenacity at times and they took their chances with they got into the Salford half. Good performances on the day from Jordan Tansey, Michael Haley and Ayden Faal but the ISC sponsored man of the match went to Mike Ratu.
