Going, going

By Matthew Horton

Tony Smith has been appointed as the new full time coach of the Great Britain side. The appointment is part time at the moment as he will finish his duties with the Rhinos for 2007.

Mixed reaction on the message boards to the news that Tony Smith is to leave the club at the end of the season.

It seems the RFL have taken the cheaper option of allowing Smith to stay with the club until the end of the season instead of attempting to buy out his contract with Leeds.

In a way I am glad, it means that there will be no disruption to the squad with a new coach coming into the frame, but I will go on wondering if a new coach at this time of year could have same effect that Peter Sharp had on Hull FC last season which for them ultimately led to Old Trafford and defeat to St Helens in the Grand Final.

Smith's first game in charge is the game against France on the weekend of 22-24 June, then there is the Gillette Fusion series against New Zealand at the end of the year before reverting to England duties as the four home nations split up for the World Cup.

The question is now, who will take over?
