Try Scorer
By Matthew Horton

The Senior Academy provided the pre-match entertainment at Headingley Carnegie as they took on their counterparts from Harlequins.

Leeds made only one change on the bench with Tom Burton coming in for Joe Chandler, while ex-Rhinos Joe Walsh and David Tootill lined up for 'Quins, who also included for Kangaroo tourist Richard Villasanti at prop.

Rhinos steal points

Leeds made the perfect start the game game, after getting a repeat set after a kick was charged by a Harlequins player the ball was moved right, the overlap was created Michael Brown found Wayne Reittie who just managed to stay infield to touch down. Briggs was unsuccessful with the conversion but the Rhinos held na early 4 point advantage.

The Rhinos were dominating and added a second score after 10 minutes, a high kick looked to have been dropped by Briggs, but the ball went backwards and Luke Burgess found Ryan Hall. His pass found Mike Ratu and he went down the Southern touchline to round Zeb Luisi to go in at the corner. Briggs was off target again to double the lead to 8-0

Harlequins hit back though, after getting a repeat set the took advantage when the ball was moved left and a clever offload from Rob Worrincey sent Tony Clubb in at the corner, Tom Bold's conversion was successful and the Rhino's lead was cut to 2 points.

The visitors then snatched the lead after 29 minutes. Firstly Dave Tootill went close and it took a god tackle from Lee Smith to stop him, but Worrall was ruled to fumble a kick by Luisi and from the scrum the QUins moved the ball right and John Sullivan went in from dummy half, Bold converted to put Quins 12-8 up.

Leeds hit back just before half time. Good work from Luke Burgess and Ben Kaye setting the position before Kyle Briggs dummied his through the defensive line to round Luisi and go in by the posts, Lee Smith converted to send the Rhinos into half time 14-12 up.

After early Harlequins pressure in the second half Leeds thought they had extended their lead when Simon Worrall went over but the try was ruled out for a forward pass. The Rhino then suffered the loss Ryan Hall, who was stretchered off with a leg injury.

Harlequins levelled the score in the 59th minute when Tom Bold converted a penalty after Leeds were penalised for not playing the ball correctly in front of their own posts and then an attempted field goal from Dylan Skee with 12 minutes left was wide of the mark.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure and took a deserved lead with 9 minutes to go, after another Leeds error gifted field position the Quins headed for the posts and Tom Bold popped over the one pointer to put Quins 15-14 in front.

Then in the last tackle of the game Harlequins were penalised for an offence in the play the ball on the 40 metre mark. Lee Smith stepped up to the plate and booted the ball over the posts to win the game.

It wasn't the best performance from the Rhinos by their own high standards and to be fair Harlequins fully deserved to take the points. Leeds were guilty of too many handling errors and playing in the wrong area of the field but somehow managed to win the game. One bright point of the night, the performance of Wayne Reittie. Enough to earn him the ISC sponsored SouthStander.com Man of the Match award.
