Young Rhinos show grit

It was a slow start to the game, both teams struggled to get into any rhythm thanks the referee who awarded 10 penalties in the first 20 minutes for various offences. The official's pateience finally snapping in the 26th minute when substitute Ben Jones was dispatched to the Sin Bin leaving the Rhinos a man short. Wakefield took advantage of this, the Rhinos defence still reorganising when lively scrum half Kyle Wood stepped round Carl Ablett to get the opening score of the evening. Former Rhino Austin Buchanan in the unfamiliar role of stand off tagged on the extras.

The loss of Jones only seemed to fire up the Rhinos and they were back in the game within 8 minutes. Firstly Luke Gale and Ablett combined superbly to send Michael Brown in at the corner in the 31st minute. The four minutes later, Kyle Briggs and Michael Brown combined to send Lee Smith in at the corner. Briggs was unable to convert either try but Leeds had gone in front while a man down. Leeds managed to take their 8-6 lead into the interval.

The Rhinos then got the perfect start to the second half, with only 4 minutes on the clock Carl Ablett made the break through the left hand side of the Wakefield defence and Mike Ratu was on hand to take the pass and go over. A change of kicker for the Rhinos as Lee Smith took over to add the extras and extend the lead to 14-6.

Leeds extended their lead further in the 56th minute, after Wakefield had turned the ball over deep in their own half a quick play the ball from Ayden Fall saw Lee Smith scoop the ball up from dummy half and go scooting over from 30 metres out. Briggs resumed the kicking duties and added the extra two point to take the Rhinos 20-6 in front.

Wakefield hit back in the 67th minute, but it was to prove to be little more than consolation as Wood, reciving the ball on the bounce, found Arron Murray with a superb pass to send the centre in at the corner. Buchanan's conversion was off target to give the Rhinos a 20-10 win and make it two victories in a row.

So the Rhinos make it back to back wins on the road, a victory platform laid by the forwards who refused to take a backward step again more experienced opposition. Luke Burgess was superb, a hit on Lima sticks in the memory. On loan Tykes player Simon Worrall improves every week and Lee Smith stuck his hand up for a first team recall. The SouthStander.com Man of the Match went to Carl Ablett, improving week on week since the ACL reconstrutction that ended his 2006 and looking like recapturing his old form
