Why all the penalties then?

The match official seemed to create a bit of controversy on Friday night. The Wakefield fans were unimpressed, some even turning on the Radio Leeds team calling the game. John Kear's post match comments mentioned something about the referee's performance being analysed. So John, I've saved you a job.

After leaving Belle Vue with a copy of the game on DVD, I sat down with a Grade One official on Saturday night and we picked through the game. Read more here....

So, what's the story with it all on Friday night. The timings are a little rough and done with a running clock but this is what we managed to pick out of the decisions made by the official. The format is time of penalty, team awarded to and a brief description of the offence

First Half

4:52, Leeds, Duncan McGilvray doesn't clear the ruck area and knocks Clinton Toopi back to the ground.
7:42, Leeds, Kevin Henderson clearly knocks the ball out of Ashley Gibson's hand as he is getting to hit feet.
8:44, Wakefield, Matt Diskin has a second attempt to Olivier Elima after held is called by the referee.
9:54, Leeds, Ben Jeffires in front of kick through by Jamie Rooney on Leeds goal line.
11:00, Leeds, McGilvray again, this time pulls Burrow over his body after the tackle was completed.
11:49, Leeds, Paul March steals ball from Peacock in 2 on 1 challenge. Team warning issued to Jason Demetriou
16:48, Leeds, Demetriou second effort on Tansey after he had regained his feet
16:53, Leeds, Demetriou says something out of turn to the official and gets marched ten. Lucky not to be sent to the Sin Bin
17:23, Leeds, Olivier Elima sticks the forearm into the face of a grounded Leeds player, Jamie Jones-Buchanan. Second warning issued to Demetriou
18:28, Wakefield, Paul March leads with elbow into Burrow after whistle has gone for knock on. Keith Senior runs into get involved with March and is penalised
19:56, Leeds, From the restart from the previous penalty. March dummies the tap and runs at Senior, Klein calls time off. Senior tackles March legally and Elima comes in to get involed. Handbags all round, Elima and Senior get Yellow carded and penalty against Elima for sparking it all off
24:48, Leeds, Paul March doesn't clear the ruck, knocks the ball away from Burrow as he attemps play the ball. March Sin Binned
26:30, Leeds, Offside. Ben Jeffries. Cost Wakefield 2 points
31:49, Wakefield, Offside. Gareth Ellis singled out by official for being inside the 10.
33:00, Leeds, Scrum offence. Given for a Wakefield prop striking for the ball (That is what I was told anyway)
40:04, Wakefield, Jamie Thackray penalised for playing the ball not square to the opponents tryline

1st Half Total: Wakefield 4 Leeds 12

Second Half (starting clock at 0:00)

1:21, Wakefield, High Tackle by Jordan Tansey on Jason Golden
9:20, Wakefield, Gareth Ellis pulls Demetriou to ground after the referee had called held
9:55, Leeds, Obstruction by Jamie Rooney while Tevita Leo-Latu was running across field
16:15, Wakefield, McGuire ball steal on Ned Catic in 3 on 1 tackle
23:25, Leeds, Adam Watene high shot on Matt Diskin
27:50, Leeds, Richard Moore late and high hit on Danny McGuire. Moore Sin Binned and incident on report.
30:32, Leeds, Adam Watene facial on Gareth Ellis
30:35, Leeds, Kevin Henderson gives the official a mouthful and gifts Leeds an extra 10 metres and 2 points
35:20, Wakefield, Ryan Bailey and Clinton Toopi not square at the play the ball
41:27, Leeds, Rooney sends the goal line restart out on the full, gift 2 points for Sinfield

2nd Half Total: Wakefield 4 Leeds 6

Overall Total: Wakefield 8 Leeds 18

So, overall a game with another high penalty count. The official who watched this game with me said a couple of penalties could have gone either way. The missed forward pass by McGilvray late doors was a poor decision that should have been picked up. But overall he said Mr Klein had a decent game and his hands were tied with having to give some of the decisions but others could have gone either way.
