David Bywaters Player Appraisal - KR Away
Posted by southstander on March 11 2007 - 15:00:38

Davids MoM
by David Bywater

After a couple of season off, we've once again asked Davidbyw to cast his eye over the Rhinos performances of the weekend and pass numerical judgement on the players.

Bound to be controversial, and to spark debate on the message boards, we'll keep tabs over the season and see if Davids appraisal of player of the season tallies with your Man-of-the-match votes.

Here are Davids thoughts about Saturdays away game against Hull KR;

1Webb6Curate's egg - looked very dangerous in attack - his combination with McGuire looks a potentially potent force - made 2 big errors in defence you would not expect from a top international.
2Donald6Quiet - should have converted McGuire's break - seems to lack the confidence to test his speed on the outside of opponents - reminiscent of Cummins in that - other than that pretty solid.
3Toopi7 One of a handful of players who could hold their head up - he best performance in a Leeds shirt.
20Gibson7Hopefully this will be the start of Ashley's Leeds career at centre - took his tries well and defended with competence.
5Smith6Unlucky not to score more than one - continued his reasonable run of form - not sure why he was substituted - surely it wasn't tactical?
6McGuire7Had a hand in all of the positive stuff that came from the Rhinos - worked very hard in defence - a slight concern would be why he didn't look to go the length of the field when he made the break and passed to Donald.
7Burrow6Like McGuire worked very hard - he just had one of those games when things just didn't happen for him.
16Bailey8My MOM - looks like he getting back to his 2004 form - he is grafting both going forward and tackling - pity he doesn't make the yardage he might - I would be tempted to try him out wider.
9Diskin5He looked very slow today - failed to get to 40% of the PTB's - this is key area of the modern game - I am not sure Diskin is the answer at this level.
10Peacock6As I said last week he looks disinterested - why who knows - perhaps a switch to the second row might give him a boost.
11JJB5His continued selection I cannot understand - Jamie tries very hard but effort alone isn't sufficient - watch how often he fails to get straight at the marker after completing the tackle.
12Ellis7His defence is the best in SL - pity if attacking play doesn't match the high standard of his tackling - if Gareth got injured Leeds would not be able to fill that hole.
13Sinfield5Petulent - a captain is supposed to lead by example - encourage his charges to greater deeds - unfortunately our captain failed to do either - perhaps if he had spent less time verballing the ref he would have had more time to do what he is paid for.
8Kylie4Was he on the field? - I never noticed such was his contribution - anonymous.
15Thackray5Not given enough game time in my view - his impact was restricted do to his time on the field coincided with Rovers have the majority of the ball.
14Ali4How the mighty have fallen - from one of the best ball-playing forwards in SL to what we saw last night - the only thing of note he did was to knock on 20 metres from his own line
23Tansey1The only contribution he made to the game was to knock the ball on when he received it- if this was a tactical substitution then it spectacularly back fired on Smith.
