Rhinos lose out to Giants

Leeds playing with the wind and down the slight slope had the better of things in the opening period, despite making errors when in possession. But it was the Rhinos who opened the scoring in the 13th minute. After a scrum on the Huddersfield 20 metre line the ball was moved to Ashley Gibson, who got on the outside to touch down in the corner. The conversion attempt from Gibson was wide but it was 4 points on the board for the Rhinos.

Leeds struck again in the 20th minute, a poor kick downfield from the Giants was fielded by Tom Sheldrake. It was a poor chase and he found the gap in the defensive line before a superb reverse pass allowed Gibson to go in untouched from 30 metres and under the posts. The conversion was successful from Gibson to extend the lead to 10-0.

The Rhinos then had chances to extend their lead but the final pass was ruled forward by the referee. Mike Ratu having a try chalked off. But Huddersfield had the better of the closing stages of the half, pressuring the Rhinos line but the defence was resolute to enable to the Rhinos to go into half time 10 points to the good.

The Rhinos started the second half strongly but again there were too many errors. In the 50th minute Kyle Briggs made a super break on the last take but Luke Gale couldnít take the pass in with the line begging. The Giants made the Rhinos pay, after a penalty 10 metres from the Rhinos line Huddersfield took a quick penalty and Tom Hemingway reached out to touch down, he then added the conversion to bring the Giants to within 4 points

Huddersfield then snatched the lead in the 63rd minute. Sean Gleeson, on loan from Wigan, making the break to go in at the corner. The conversion from Hemingway was successful to give the Giants a 2 point lead. The Giants kept putting the pressure on and when a drop out from the Rhinos was not ruled to have travelled 10 metres by the referee, Hemingway added the simple penalty to extend the Giants lead to 14-10 with 6 minutes left.

Leeds hit back straight from the kick off, the ball was batted back by a Huddersfield player. Indecision in the Huddersfield ranks allowed Carl Ablett to pick the ball up and fall over the line. There was tension as the referee checked with both touch judges before awarding the try. Kyle Briggs took over the kicking duties but it was blown away by the wind and this tied the game at 14-14 with 4 minutes to go.

The game though wasnít over, the kick off from Huddersfield was allowed to go dead by the Rhinos. From the resulting set, it was Hemingway who put the grubber kick in the last tackle. The ball hit the post and Steve Shaw was on hand to touch down. Hemingway added the conversion to give the Giants a 6 point lead with seconds left on the clock to condemn last seasons Senior Academy Champions to an opening game defeat.

Not the start to the season the Rhinos were looking for but full credit to the Giants they deserved their victory, too much dropped ball in the first half ultimately being the downfall of the Rhinos. Carl Ablett impressed on his return after injury and Ashley Gibson looked sharp but the ISC Sponsored SouthStander.com Man of the Match went to full back Tom Sheldrake
