The days when I worried about the SouthStander messageboard are long gone. Almost as long gone as some of the Dannys aliases. If I had a pound for every time I've been told that the board is in terminal decline then I'd be offering to buy the Rhinos from Mr Caddick.|
What I long since realised is that messageboard communities are as transient. New people will join, and regular posters will cease their activity, it is the way of the world. New interests, disillusionment with the club, or movement to a new job/city are the main reasons for departure, fewer leave because they feel that they can't rise to the challenge of a good discussion. As a moderator it is my duty to try and make the time that everyone spends in my house as pleasant as possible.
What this means is I won't tell you what to say, but if you overstep the mark then I'll have a word. Both McLaren Field and myself are relaxed enough, and experienced enough, to know that a good community will self regulate, perhaps with the occasional reminder.
The whole idea of a messageboard is to develop a community who have a cross section of views and enjoy healthily debating them. So long as people can recognise that it is possible for others to have diametrically opposed views, and that they can put forward their argument rationally and without degeneration into name calling.
News of the demise of the messageboard has, once again, been greatly exaggerated. A quick look at 'Google Analytics' tells me that hits are actually slightly up on the end of last season and far from tail-off during the winter, they have actually stayed the same. Far from dying, the messageboard is in rude health, and long may it continue.
