Youngsters Go Down at York
Posted by southstander on February 04 2007 - 20:51:59

Bright Light!

I know it was a fund raising friendly, but not for the first time I find myself leaving the Huntington Stadium with 1,500 other paying supporters most of whom were questioning whether it was all worth the effort.

Part of my reasoning was based on the fact that it was eleven quid to get in, one pound for each York substitude named over the earsplitting tannoy. Was it really worth a quid more that the Keith Senior Testimonial to see the kids take on twenty-four of Yorks finest?

We bring you all of the action here......

Youngsters Go Down At York

The Rhinos started the game facing into the low summer sunlight in front of a decent turnout. Good early pressure wasfruitless and it was the Knights who registered the opening points of the match. A Rhinos knock-on near their own line gifted posession to the home side and with the extra six. The ball was moved left and Wray burrowed under the tacklers to score from short range. Gargan missed what should have been a simple conversion but the forty percent of the crowd that hailed from the Counties capital city had plenty to cheer.

It took the Rhinos three minutes to respond when, after eight minutes, Tansey stepped off both feet from fifteen metres to score. Tansey converted his own for a narrow lead.

Two minutes later and a great break from Lee Smith gave Tansey plenty of space for his second in as many minutes. This time he missed what should have been a simple conversion but the scoreline was going to script. But York weren't reading our script.

On eighteen a patient York build-up saw then work their way to the Leeds line before Smith stumbled, shrugged off the Leeds tacklers and went over. Gargan goaled to level the scores at 10-10.

Now it was Yorks' turn to score two in two as Tansey got caught on the back foot, in posession, on the half way line. As York moved the ball left Brown collected and went fifty metres to score under the sticks. Gargan goaled for 10-16 and the Rhinos youngsters were starting to lose interest.

On twenty-seven the Rhinos failed to cover after a missed tackle and once again York exploited Leeds weakness out left for Rayner to score. Gargan was accurate with the conversion for 10-22 and the game was drifting. The writing was on the wall just before half time when another good York build-up saw Esders cross with the Rhinos struggling to get a hand on him. Liddle missed the goal attempt but the home side went in at half-time with a commanding 26-10 lead.

The youngsters had shown spells of good play but the numbers of interchanges on both sides had led to confusion. York simply seemed to be playing more like a team.

Leeds were first on the board in the second half when Faal went over off a short ball on the Rhinos second set on the York line. Tansey goaled to narrow the gap to ten points. But on fifty-five after Lee Smith was forced to knock the ball dead-in-goal, John Smith went over for his second of the afternoon and with Liddles goal the home side were back ahead by sixteen.

The last score of the game came with fifteen minutes remaining when Hart ran strongly and pushed his way over. Lee Smith added the two for 22-32 but no late rally was forthcoming and York held on for the win that they probably deserved.

A nothing game, a nothing result and nothing learnt. Perhaps I won't bother to put myself through it again next year!
