Our Ash Gets the Twenty
Posted by southstander on January 23 2007 - 16:31:49

Number 20

Following on a contract extension until the end of the 2009 season, our man Ashley Gibson has rounded off a great pre-season by being given the number twenty jersey, cementing his place in the first team squad.

I had the honour of being invited to Headingley this morning to present Ash with his shirt on behalf of his SouthStander.com sponsors, and mightily chuffed he was with it too.

After breaking into the first team last year, Ash has proved that he has got what it takes, and has been rewarded with recognition in the Rhinos twenty. Ash joins fellow Academy stars Lee Smith, Nick Scruton and Danny Williams in the twenty as the Rhinos once again look to a combination of youth and experience to bring success in 2007.

As I've been quoted on the main Rhinos site as saying;

“The members of SouthStander.com are delighted that Ashley has been rewarded for his hard work by being given the number 20 shirt for the 2007 season. We will be supporting him again this year as he further establishes himself as one Leeds' Super League stars.

“Sponsoring a fringe player is usually a risk, not knowing if he'll be loaned out or moved on, but in Ash we knew we were backing a player who had the necessary skill and dedication to become a first team regular and we are sure that he will go from strength-to-strength this season.

“Ash was our Academy Player of the Season in 2005, voted for by the site regulars. Just for once it is nice to say 'we told you so!”
