Hooking For England

England met Tonga in the final of the Federation Shield at Widnes Halton Stadium this afternoon. The Rhinos were well represented in the England side with Smith, Gibson, Scruton, Jones-Buchanan and Bailey all named in the seventeen.

England had won all three games in the tournament, including a win against todays opponents, but the Tongans had upset form and beaten France to the final.

We bring you all of the action here......

England Victorious

Formalities over, including a formidible looking haka, England got the game started with a kick deep into the Tongan half.

England had all of the early posession and territory. Hodgson went close on eight minutes but had his foot in touch a fraction before touching down. Tonga survived the scare but insisted on dropping the ball on almost every posession.

On eleven minutes, Purdham took a pass off Hodgson, who had received the ball from Ashley Gibson, and grounded the ball as he crossed the line on his back. Rooney goaled from the touchline for 6-0. We were off and running.

On nineteen minutes there was total confusion in the Tongan defence after a Purdham grubber was picked up by Brett Ferres and touched down. Rooney slotted the extras over and already it was starting to look like Englands Shield. But three minutes later and Tonga were back in it as Tuiaki dragged two players over with him to score. Mateo missed the conversion and the score stood at 12-4.

Five minutes later and Atkins lost the ball on his own twenty. England were under pressure and a crossfield kick was missed by Calderewood and appeared to be scored by Uaisele, but the video referee ruled it out for a knock-on. On thirty-five the Tongans did grab their second try as a nice passing move cut the England defence to shreds as Mateo scampered over. He converted his own goal for 12-10.

With thirty seconds of the half left, a Scruton break saw him take a tackle just short. The ball was moved right and then left for Calderwood to cross in the corner. Rooney brought on the half-time hooter with a successful wide conversion for 18-10 at the interval.

It had been a mistake riddled half, with England managing to keep the ball for longer than Tonga, and this was reflected in the scoreline.

With the second half ten minutes old Tyrone Smith did well to ground the ball as he went over on his back as Tonga exploited space out wide. Mateo overhit the conversion attempt but the margin was down to four. Five minutes later and Lee Smith put in a sensational try saving tackle on Mateo, denying Tonga the lead.

With the clock showing fifty-eight minutes Calderwood broke downfield off a JJB ball. England moved the ball left to right for Hodgson to come back on the angle and score. Rooney goaled for 24-14 and the margin was starting to look enough.

With ten minutes to go, England scored the try of the game. A Calderwood break and inside pass to Ashton and then Rooney to go over under the sticks. Rooney converted and gave England a 30-14 lead. Tonga were looking out on their feet, and a man down due to an earlier sin-binning.

With minutes to go the Tongans proved that they are not fit to be playing the game at a higher level with two players sent off for their involvement in punch-ups. Solomono was one after he came off the bench to get involved in the fight. As the hooter sounded (Silverwood didn't stop it as he dealt with the fights) Rooney kicked a penalty goal to seal a 32-14 win.

Calderwood, Crabtree and JJB were sensation in this game and Smith and Gibson acquitted themselves well. England were inaugral winners of the Federation Shield, and deservedly so.
