No-one is to Blame for Awful Season
Posted by southstander on September 28 2006 - 07:51:57

Last Trophy

Peter Smith penned very interesting article in last night Yorkshire Evening Post.

The story was based around an interview with Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington who was attempting to fend of calls for the head of coach Tony Smith. In doing so he stated that no-one was to blame for the Rhinos awful season, and hinted that there would be very little changed for next season, emphasising that Smith would see out his contract.

Well Mr Hetherington, if nothing is going to change, how the hell are we going to compete next season?

More thoughts here...

It seems that Tony Smith is now destined to see out the remaining year on his contract and will lead the Rhinos into 2007 with almost the same playing staff that he had in 2006. We will of course have the full 'benefit' of Toopi and Thackray as new signings and will look forward to the arrival of Leuluai and Webb. We will definitely be losing five players in Poching, Mathers, Feather, O'Neil, and Walker and if the rumours are to believed there could be several others making for the doors before the start of next year.

Essentially, Smith will be working without five established and experienced players, welcoming four new arrivals, and trying to continue to mould Gibson, Smith, Tansey and Kirke into regular first teamers. Without several more new signings;

"We aren't short of talent and with an average age of 24 we have got one of the youngest squads in Super League.

"It is not a case of a complete failure of the squad where we need a total overhaul, which is what we did in 2002."

then I take it that the players aren't considered at fault by the chief executive.

Tony Smith has coached a side which have gone from World Champions to also-rans in the space of two seasons, but according to Hetherington;

"He will be coach next season.

"He is the man to take the club forward, no question and the length of time left on his contract is not an issue."

so Tony isn't at fault either!

In 'Hetherington speak' the lads are fine and we've recruited well (despite a net loss of players), and the current coach is the right man for the job. Sorry Gary - I just can't work this one out - we failed but no-one is to blame?

We've failed this season, and no-one can argue with that failure. The statements yesterday give no underlying reason for our disasterous season and hold no comfort for your customers. Reading between the lines you are telling the fans that next season will be 'business as usual' and we can expect more of the same. This article is not going to help sell your expensive season tickets, it is going to lead to more disillusion and more alientation.
