U21's Set the Precendent

The watch hadn’t got to the two-minute mark when the Rhinos made their first impression on the scoreboard. Ian Kirke’s superb offload in heavy traffic into the hands of Ben Kaye, he then found Ashley Gibson who went across field before a perfect pass was met by Dave Tootill and the big prop went over the line. 3 minutes later, Tootill was at it again with almost a carbon copy of his first score. James Archibald providing the final pass this time. Gibson converted both and Leeds were soon 12-0 up.

Leeds then hit the Giants with another quick fire double. First after 10 minutes Jason Hart released Jordan Tansey, he looked all ends a scorer but the Huddersfield cover converged, but a looping pass from found Ashley Gibson and he went in at the corner. Three minutes later, the Giants defence was all at sea as Briggs went up the short side and found Michael Ratu. He got himself in the clear and left the full back for dead as he went under the posts. Gibson again converted both to double the advantage to 24-0.

It was all one way traffic to the Huddersfield line, this time Tansey making the break. He found Gibson on the inside who set Luke Gale off in the direction of the line. Somehow the stand off was caught by some desperate Giants defence and was stopped right on the line. From the play the ball, Ben Kaye threw the dummy and went over from dummy half. Gibson converted; there was 18 minutes on the watch and Leeds were 30 points to the good.

Leeds had the misfortune to lose Gibson and Archibald to injuries from which they wouldn’t return and it was the home side that struck just before the half time whistle. Tom Hemingway’s accurate pass finding Ashley Johnson and he went in at the corner. The conversion from Hemingway was off target to leave the Rhinos 30-4 up at the break.

Leeds made the brighter start to the second half and they were first on the board with 46 minutes on the clock. From a scrum deep in the Huddersfield half Kyle Briggs fed Michael Ratu, he set off across field but then a powerful hand off knocked the Giants player to the ground and he went over. Briggs took over the kicking in the absence of Gibson and Tansey, who was withdrawn at half time, and was successful.

The Giants hit straight back, ex Rhino Mat Gardner putting a kick through. It hit an unaware Michael Brown and went straight back into Gardner’s hands and he went in at the corner. Hemingway’s conversion attempt just dropped short of the posts to leave the Rhinos 36-8 up.

The games intensity dropped as the players tired in the very hot conditions but Leeds dug deep to again score two quick tries. First Steve Brook made the break from the base of the scrum, he got to half way before finding Michael Ratu and the centre went on a mazy run to go over for this hat-trick try. Briggs was unsuccessful with the conversion, but he added the extras after Ian Kirke charged down the touchline before bumping Gareth Hull off to touch down to take the Rhinos 46-8 in front.

The Giants had the last word of the afternoon with two late tries from Luke George, both coming from kicks through. Hemingway was successful with both conversions to take the Rhinos to 5 wins in a row as 46-20 victors.

Hot hot day in Huddersfield, and if your going to the First Team game tomorrow it might be worth putting the sun cream in the car. For the Rhinos Jason Hart and Dave Tootill was impressive as was Ben Kaye on his debut. The SouthStander.com man of the match went to Michael Ratu, a hat trick of tries and powerful ball in hand all day.
