U21's Win Bad Tempered Affair

After hearing "Casper" Smith on Boots'n'All on Wednesday night, he mentioned the fact he had a fully fit squad and there would be strong line-up in the 21's. He wasn't wrong, ex-Rhino Dave Wrench and French International Olivier Elima featuring on the team sheet along with former NL1 player of the year Sam Obst. Mark Field, John Whittle and Mark Applegarth also looking to impress and stick their hand up for a first grade jumper.

Leeds moved Ashley Gibson to full back to accommodate the return of Mike Ratu, Jamie I'Anson came back into the starting line up and Ayden Faal dropped back to loose forward to cover Carl Ablett who got some deserved first team action.

It was the Rhinos who opened the scoring after six minutes, after a penalty had given the Rhinos field position deep in the Wakefield half the ball was moved left from Kyle Briggs to Jordan Tansey, he found Ian Kirke and his superb pass gave Ashley Gibson the opportunity to sneak in at the corner. Gibson was unable to convert his try but the Rhinos were ahead 4-0. Wakefield looked to get back into the game and threw everything at the Rhinos but poor handling and silly mistakes were hampering their cause.

The Rhinos extended their lead with a 2 try burst, in the 18th minute James Archibald took the ball in from dummy half 15 metres away from the Wakefield line. It was a powerful run, bumping off two defenders before a second effort saw him reach out and touch down. Then 4 minutes later, and offload from Jamie I'Anson found Birggs. He combined with Tansey again and the scrum half found Mike Ratu. His running line was excellent and he showed great strength to touch down. Gibson converted both to take the Rhinos 16-0 up.

Wakefield got themselves back in the game when they struck 7 minutes before half time. A knock on by Jason Hart gave Wakefield a scrum on the Leeds 30 metre line. Mark Applegarth went to the short side and found Sam Obst, the Leeds defence was caught short and the pass from Obst left Steve Lewis untouched as he went over the line. Andy Spink converted to take the Rhinos in at half time 10 points clear.

The second half saw the Rhinos start on the back foot as errors gave Wakefield a foothold deep in the Rhinos half, but try as they did the Wildcats just couldn't break the resolute defence. Things blew up in the 48th minutes when Michael Brown and Olivier Elima had words, this turned to fists and the biff returned. Players came running in from left right and centre and it took Mr Brooke a couple of minutes to sort things out. After consulting with his touch judge, Elima and Brown were sent to the Sin Bin to calm down but the Rhinos Liam Brown was dismissed for running in to join in with the fighting.

The Rhinos were now a man short, but parity was restored in the 56th minute when Scott Donald was sin-binned for holding down after a super break by Chris Buttery. From the resulting tap Leeds went to the short side and Dave Tootill, he showed great strength before a superb offload allowed Steve Brook to get in at the North-East corner. Again Leeds made it two quick tries in succession as Tansey broke through the Wakefield cover, Dave Tootill was again the man in support and his pass gave Ayden Faal a run in from 25 metres out. Gibson converted both to take the Rhinos 28-6 up.

The Rhinos made the points safe in the 68th minute when a last tackle play saw the ball moved quickly left by Jordan Tansey to Ashley Gibson, the pass from Gibson was bullet like and it found substitute James Endersby and he went over in the corner. Gibson converted again from sideline and the Rhinos were 34-6 to the good and the two points were in the bag.

The Wildcats has the final say in proceedings, they recovered the kick off and while Rhinos defence was still trying to reorganise the ball was moved quickly through hands and it enabled Olivier Elima the opportunity to stretch out and score. Danny Ratcliffe converted to leave the Rhinos 34-12 winners.

Superb performance. Against a much more experienced team the young Rhinos stood up to the challenge posed by the Wakefield outfit. Ashley Gibson impressed at Full Back and Kyle Briggs gets more or more confident every week after making the step up from the 18's. The SouthStander.com man of the match vote was the closest its been for a long time, Steve Brook and Dave Tootill both putting in huge performances but it was the second rower who got the casting vote.
