U21's Win a Thriller

It was the visitors who got the better start to the evening, after getting a repeat set the Warriors caught the Rhinos defence asleep as Thomas Coyle ran across the Leeds defensive line before finding the gap and touching down with 9 minutes on the watch. The conversion attempt from Melling drifting wide.

Leeds hit back four minutes later, Tansey hoisting a huge bomb into the South-East corner where David Small lost it in the sun and James Archibald was on hand to touch down over the line. Gibsonís conversion was unsuccessful and it was all square. Leeds though snatched the lead just three minutes later, Dave Tootillís superb offload finding Jordan Tansey and the scrum half stepped his was under the posts. The conversion from Gibson was added to put the Rhinos 10-4 up.

Wigan refused to lie down and they struck again on 24 minutes and they caught the Rhinos defence out on the 5th tackle. The Warriors went up the short side with Joel Tompkins and his pass found Mark Calderwood and the former Rhino crossed in the North-West corner. The conversion attempt from Melling again missed the target.

Leeds struck back again at the Warriors, Chris Buttery made the initial break up field before he was halted. A quick play the ball saw Jordan Tansey scoot from dummy half before his perfectly timed pass found Luke Burgess and the big front rower charged over from 20 metres out despite the attentions of Calderwood. Gibson converted to put the Rhinos 16-8 up.

The visitors kept themselves in contention by scoring right on the stroke of half time. After getting a repeat set the Warriors built the pressure up on the Rhinos line and Danny Kilshaw sliced his way through to touch down. Melling this time added the conversion to take the half time score to 16-14 in favour of the Rhinos.

The Rhinos got the better start to the second half and extended their lead with 48 minutes on the watch, after Jason Hartís break took the Rhinos deep into Wigan territory the ball was moved right from Kyle Briggs to Jordan Tansey. His pass allowed Ashley Gibson to get on the out side of the Wigan defence before he found James Archibald and he forced his way over in the corner. Gibson added the conversion to take the Rhinos 8 points clear.

Despite the conditions there were plenty of mistakes from both side but it helped contribute to a fascinating encounter and it was Wigan how got themselves right back in the game with 15 minutes left. Darryl Kay finding a huge hole in the Wigan defence, he had options left and right and went to Mark Calderwood who went in for this second try of the evening. Chris Melling was again off target with the kick but it cut the gap to four points.

Wigan now threw everything at the Rhinos in an attempt to snatch the game but the defence was superb at times. The Rhinos then made the game safe with 5 minutes to go, a little kick into the in goal by Carl Ablett was somehow spilled and the ball rolled free and Ashley Gibson was on hand to touch down. His conversion attempt drifted wide but it took the Rhinos home 26-18.

A huge effort from all 34 players, it was too hot watching from the South Stand. I canít begin to imagine how the players cope in conditions like that. For the Rhinos, Dave Tootill was a willing worker. As were Luke Burgess and Jamie IíAnson. Kyle Briggs made the step up from the 18ís look easy, as did James Archibald. The SouthStander.com man of the match went to Carl Ablett.

The Senior Academy are back in action next Friday when they travel to the Willows to take on the Salford City Reds, kick off is at 5.45.
