Rhinos Sign Kylie?
Posted by southstander on June 04 2006 - 09:52:07

Not That One!

Gary Hetheringtons penchant for New Zealanders looks like landing the second of the week as strong rumours down under are linking us with the signature of Kylie Leuluai from Manly Sea Eagles.

Leuluai, cousin of one of todays 'Quins opponents Thomas, is twenty-eight years old, but with only sixty-two career outings since his debut in 1999 he looks like a 'raw material' purchase rather than the finished article.

Leuluai is a bit of a journeyman with four clubs to his name in seven years. He's worn the colours of Wests Tigers, Sydney Roosters, Paramatta Ells and currently the Manly Sea Eagles. He's also been capped for his country (World Cup 2000) and was in last years New Zealand 'A' side.

Sixty-two outings, and just four tries, in seven years may set alarm bells ringing, as might his five games from the bench so far in the 2006 season.

Hetherington and Smith must have seen something in Kylie that four previous coaches haven't and feel that they have the necessary skills to bring the best out of a player who, for the most part, seems to be a 'making up the numbers' kind of guy. Without doubt, the acquisition of a 5'11" and 17st 12lb is a move in the right direction, and he will have soul mates in Lauiti'iti and Toopi and possibly Willie Poching for the 2007 season.

Time will tell whether his signing is genius, or a panic buy, lets hope it is the former.
