Man of the Match
By Matthew Horton

After defeat last time out and a week off the Senior Academy looked to get back to business in the curtain raiser at Odsal.

A stronger looking Rhinos side had Ashley Gibson, Carl Ablett and Ian Kirke back in the line up after first team duty. Jamie IíAnson also made the run on side at the expense of Chris Feather who was in First Grade.

U21's First to Win by 30

It was a blustery night at Odsal and the wind was behind the backs of the Rhinos in the first half as they attacked the Coral Stand and it was the Rhinos who registered first points on 5 minutes. Carl Ablett making the break from dummy half after a quick play the ball. He has options either side and elected to go to Ashley Gibson who went in under the posts. Gibson then converting his own try.

The Rhinos stuck again on their next set in possession, the Rhinos went up the short side and it was Gibson this time that turned try provider. He got on the outside of Larne Patrick and went down the touchline, he then drifted in field and Dale Harris was on hand to go the last 20 metres and squeeze in at the corner. The conversion attempt from Gibson was blown away by the breeze but Leeds were 10 points to the good.

The Leeds defence was magnificent and Bradford were struggling to get away from their own end of the ground and the pressure mounted even more when Andy Smith knocked on 10 metres from his own line. The Rhinos didnít waste the opportunity as Carl Ablett picked the ball up from the base of the scrum to go under the posts untouched. Gibson tagged on the extras and Leeds were 16-0 up.

The Bulls got themselves back in the game on the 20 minute mark, after back to back penalties got the Bulls deep into Rhinos territory. Mark Flanagan found Sam Burgess and the loose forward showed great skill to offload to Craig Kopczak who went in under the posts. Flanagan converted and the Rhinos lead was suddenly reduced to 10 points.

Leeds though, replied 4 minutes later. Tansey and Ablett again using the short side and releasing Gibson down the Popular Side touchline. Gibson then had options either way or it was Tansey who was on the inside to go in under the posts. Gibson added the conversion to restore the Rhinos 6 point lead. Then the Rhinos extended their lead, as a reverse kick from Tansey was dropped by Burgess under pressure from Ablett and Mark Watts was the man on the spot to go over the line. Gibson again converted and that took the Rhinos into a 28-6 half time lead.

Then playing into the wind Leeds got the perfect start to the second half when it was only 4 minutes old. Michael Brown creating the field position after a superb break through some poor Bradford defence. He was eventually dragged down 5 metres short of the line, but a quick play the ball saw James Endersby find Jordan Tansey, he went on a cross field run looking for a gap in the Bradford defence before finding Ashley Gibson back on the inside. The running line from Gibson was superb as the Bradford defence was wrong footed and the centre went in by the posts. He added the conversion to put the Rhinos 34-6 in front.

The game then settled into a quiet period as Leeds were happy to try and pin Bradford deep in their own half and the Bulls just couldnít find a way through the Leeds defence which was led by Luke Burgess and Jamie IíAnson. Some of the hits were magnificent, causing the Bulls to lose the football on a number of occasions.

It was Bradford though who got the next points of the game on 65 minutes, a run around with Matty Brooks and Sam Burgess just fooled the Rhinos defence for one moment and it was Brooks long pass the found Richard Johnson and he side stepped James Endersby to get over the line. Luke Helliwell took over the kicking duties and was unlucky as the ball hit the posts and bounced out.

Leeds though got the final points of the game, when after yet another Bradford error close to their own line saw Leeds awarded a scrum on the 10 metre line and it was a case of same again as this time Steve Brooke took the ball from the base of the scrum to go over the line more or less untouched, just as Ablett has done in the opening half. Jordan Tansey took over the kicking duties and tagged on the extras to give the Rhinos a convincing 40-10 victory.

A superb performance from the Rhinos tonight and it must have brought a smile to the face of Graeme Hallas. The defence was superb tonight, a big committed effort from all the team. Luke Burgess was powerful all night and Jamie IíAnson is revelling since reverting back to prop. The centres of Brown and Gibson, until forced with an injury, caused problems for the Bulls every time they had ball in hand. But the SouthStander.com man of the match went to Jordan Tansey, he was the driving force behind the team and looked like creating something every time he had ball in hand.

The Senior Academy now have a week off and their next game is against Wigan Warriors on Friday 9th June at Headingley Carnegie. Kick off is 5.45.
