Winning Start

By Matthew Horton in a field somewhere next to White Hart Lane

Barrie McDermott’s coaching career got off to a successful start today as the Leeds Rhinos Foundation Academy team travelled to the capital to take on their counterparts from Harlequins. This is an Under 16’s team, with 5 players on the bench, unlimited interchange and 35 minutes each way.

All the news here...

It was a 9 try demolition from the Rhinos and they were on the board as early as the second minute when Josh Scott went over for the opening try. There were four further tries in the first half from Danny Lawton, Tom Rushworth, Jack Ely and John Elkington. Danny Lawton was five from five with the boot to give the Rhinos a 30-0 half time lead.

Leeds continued to press home their advantage and tries from David Watmough and James Worlsey extended the lead before Torren Ambrose finally got the home side on the board after an interception. Ben Bolger converted that try. Leeds though hammered home their advantage with further tries from Chris Clarkson and the enthusiastic Ty Jeffers with Lawton remaining perfect with the boot for a 54-6 win.

A good hit out first up for the side. The whole team were very enthusiastic with their attitude to the game and Barrie was pleased with all their efforts. Tom Rushworth impressed in the centre as did prop Kenny Parker. The man of the match went to Jack Ely.
