U18's Set the Trend for 2 Point Loss

Leeds attacking with the breeze went into half time 12-0 up after a super first half performance when the defence stood up to everything that Bradford threw at them and managing to get their noses in front. First in the 14th minute Luke Gale put Joe Chandler into a gap down 40 meters from the Bradford line. Last weeks SouthStander.com man of the match keeping his composure with options either way. Luke Gale has followed play and was on hand to go over the posts.

The second try came 8 minutes later when after an error from Joe Walsh gave the Rhinos possession deep in Bradford territory the ball was moved from the North to South by a combination of Gale and Kyle Briggs and Michael Ratuís running line was superb as he went under the posts. Briggs converting both tries. It was in truth a scrappy opening half, with the whistle of James Child dominating proceedings a little due to the poor tackling technique of the Bradford side.

Bradford started the second half strongly after a grilling from Paul Medley at half time but again the Leeds defence was resolute and Bradford errors not helping their cause. The Bulls finally made the break through on 59 minutes when Larne Patrick found Joe Walsh and his superb offload send Ryan Smith in by the side of the posts. Luke Helliwell converting to half the deficit.

It was the Rhinos though who got next points on 68 minutes. After a Bradford knock on Kyle Briggs went storming up field, he found Tom Sheldrake before the full back flung the ball outside to James Archibald. He picked the ball up on the bounce before getting on the outside of Dwaine Nelson to go over. Briggs conversion attempt into the wind went wide and it was to prove a costly miss.

Leeds were now looking a tired outfit, they had put their all into the game and were backing up from playing against Hull last Sunday. They allowed the kick off after the Archibald try to go dead, the goal line drop out wasnít the deepest and after pounding the Rhinos line Sean Johnson found Sam Burgess and he reached out to score. Helliwell converted and the gap was down to 4.

It was a question now if the Rhinos could hang on as the Bulls charged up field in an attempt to snatch the game. And that they did with 5 minutes left when the Rhinos were caught sleeping on the short side on the last tackle and it was Walsh again who found Luke Helliwell and he went in at the corner. Despite the best efforts of the South Stand Helliwell kept his composure to add on the extras and nudge Bradford in front for the first time. Despite all their efforts the Rhinos just couldnít get back into the game and they slipped to their second defeat of the season.

Joe Walsh returned to haunt his old club with a superb performance and was helped by his partner in crime Sam Burgess. They were responsible for most of the penalties the Bulls conceded in the game. For the Rhinos Tom Sheldrake was superb at full back and Ryan Hall had his best game of the season. Ben Jones in the front row took the Rhinos forward and Ben Kaye caught the eye as well. The SouthStander.com man of the match went to the captain Michael Ratu; he led his troops from the front with some powerful attack and defence and took his try well.

The Junior Academy are back in action next Saturday when they travel to The Jungle to take on Castleford Tigers. Kick off is at 2.30pm.
