Tansey Played Well
By Matthew Horton

The unbeaten Rhinos travelled to Knowsley Road on Friday night looking to make it three in a row for this season.

There were nine changes from the victory at Wigan last week and the Saints line-up included big-guns; Ian Hardman, Scott Moore and Vinny Anderson.

We bring you all the action......

U21's Humiliated

Saints took the lead after only 3 minutes with heavy pressure on the Leeds line. After forcing a goal line drop out, Saints spread the ball to the left and allowed Sean Weed to cross, with Ste Tyrer adding the extras from out wide.

The lead was doubled minutes later when Scott Moore a short kick up underneath the sticks, James Endersby’s attempt to bat the ball dead failed as the ball held up on the heavy pitch, allowing Matt Smith to touch down. Leeds had been put under real pressure by St Helens and in the first ten minutes hardly had ball in hand.

On the 15-minute mark, Saints scored a try down the left flank, with the ball going through six pair of hands before Miles Greenwood did well to touch down in the left corner, with Tyrer unable to convert giving Saints a 16-point advantage. Leeds made a break from inside their own half when Fox broke clear, only for a great try saving tackle on half way by Saints full back Ian Hardman, before Ian Kirk was held up over the line by Saints defence.

Fantastic play by Scott Moore sent Ste Tyrer free down the left hand side, who proceeded to beat one Leeds defender before slipping a lovely pass inside for Vinny Anderson to score.

With Leeds in possession on Saints 40, allowed Gaz Langley to intercept and race 60 yards for the score, and leave Saints totally dominating. On the stroke of half time, Ste Tyrer got the chance to stretch the lead even further after Tansey knocked on, but his kick went wide right of the posts, and leave the Saints 26-0 up at the half.

Leeds tried to fight back in the third quarter of the game as the teams traded blows to no real effect, Ashley Gibson making a number of breaks from Leeds, with Ian Hardman executing some great one on one tackles, on one occasion a yard short of the line with Gibson looking certain to score.

The game turned in the 62nd minute, Leeds found Harris out wide, who instead of going for corner himself, inexplicably passed inside to Gibson who knocked on whilst in the act of scoring. It was the green light the Saints needed and they responded in style on the next set, with a great ball round the corner from Craig Ashall to Dave Hull, who bounced off the Leeds defender to touch down.

Saints found another gear and began to turn on the style off loading at every opportunity, Paul Clough made an initial break on his own 40, and great support from Saints backs eventually left Miles Greenwood in possession to touch down under the sticks and leave Saints 38-0 up. Late in the game a great little chip from Moore over the top of the Leeds defence in his own half found Anderson, who offloaded to Ian Hardman to race clear. The Saints full back looked certain to score before being ankle tapped 15 yards from the line by Peter Fox, but showed great presence of mind to offload while on the floor to Vinny Anderson who went in under the posts.

The Rhinos thought they’d scored a consolation through Peter Fox in the last minute, but it was ruled out by a forward pass.

It could be described as one of those nights, Saints threw everything at Leeds in the first 20 minutes and it was just too much to peg back. The loss of Carl Ablett to first team duty left Leeds with a three-man bench and just made life a little bit harder. Ian Kirke again had a strong game and stuck his hand up for a first team spot, Peter Fox lifted his performance but the Rhino who caught they eye on the most difficult of nights was Jordan Tansey.
