Youngsters Make it to the Final

Leeds began attacking the western end of the ground, looking to put that poor performance again Widnes in the Major Semi Final behind them and they registered first points after 10 minutes when Scott Murrell crossed under the posts to give Ashley Gibson an easy conversion.

The next 20 minutes saw Leeds on the back foot as Castleford piled on the pressure, the Leeds defence though stood up to the task and slightly against the run of play scored again on 32 minutes. After a penalty, the standard move that has provided so much success this season was put into operation and Jordan Tansey put Danny Williams in at the corner. Gibson was unable to convert but the Rhinos were 10 points ahead.

Castleford though got the rewards for their pressure five minutes from half time when Caldon Bravo, a constant threat for the Tigers, powered his way over into the north-east corner with three defenders on his back. Dominic Brambani was unable to convert but it pulled the Tigers back to within 4 points going into half time.

Castleford got the perfect start to the second half when they scored from their opening possession. Dominic Brambani taking advantage of a huge gap in the Rhinos defence to go in by the side of the posts. He was able to convert the try to bring the Tigers level and then it was game on. The question was though did the visitors have enough petrol left in the tank.

The answer was no, first Jason Golden went over for the Rhinos three minutes later after good work by Murrell and then on 51 minutes Danny Williams found some daylight to go speeding over. Gibson was unable to convert one try and Tansey was off target with the other but the Rhinos were now ahead 18-10. Then on 54 minutes, something that hasn’t been seen all season. Leeds attempted a kick at goal after a penalty, Tansey though missing with the attempt.

Leeds then went further ahead with a bizarre try on 65 minutes, the referee ruling that Scruton’s offload had his Tansey on his knees. The Tigers defence stopped, waiting for a knock on and the full back touched down by the side of the posts. Scott Murrell became the third Leeds kicker used on the night and he raised the flags to make it 24-10 to the Rhinos. Castleford hit straight back; recovering the kick off the moved quickly downfield and John Astbury went through a huge gap to under the posts and give Brambani an easy conversion.

Leeds though stamped their authority on the game with four tries in the last 10 minutes as the Tigers finally ran out of steam. Ashley Gibson crossing for a hat trick, one after super work by Peter Fox and the others by slicing through a tiring Tigers defence. Dave Tootill stretched out to get a well deserved try but Murrell could only convert one of the tries to leave Leeds 3 from 10 with the boot but deserving 42-16 winners.

For the Rhinos, the forwards set the platform for the victory. Jason Golden was superb on defence assisted by Luke Burgess. Joe Walsh showed up well at Loose Forward and Scott Murrell was a calming influence in midfield. The SouthStander.com Man of the Match went to Danny Williams. Two tries on the night and a willing worker constantly coming in field to help his forwards out. The Rhinos now go onto face Widnes in the Grand Final at Headingley on Thursday night (8pm). It’s an ideal opportunity to put the mistakes of the Major Semi-Final behind them. Make sure you are there to cheers the lads on.
