Rumour Mill Keeps Turning
Posted by southstander on August 17 2005 - 09:44:21

From reading through the various threads on the messageboard , and other, you could be forgiven for thinking that Gary Hetherington has ordered half a dozen spare chequebooks - just in case.

As the 1st September approaches, and the embargo on taking to players coming out of contract is lifted, Rhinos supporters are eagerly awaiting news of who will be pulling on the Blue & Amber next season.

Most people agree that the number of departures is alarmingly high, and that the spaces in the first team cannot all be filled from the junior ranks. We must be signing some players...but who?

We've already secured the services of Scott Donald (for Mark Calderwood), and Shane Millard (for Andrew Dunemann), but have been linked with a whole host of other players. We give our opinion and likelihood here, as the rumour mill continues to spin out of control.

Our opinions are exactly that, and while I'd love to be getting information from inside the club, I'm in the dark as much as the rest of you.

InJamie Peacock
This one looks like a done deal, it has even been in the Guardian! Peacock has supposedly told his team-mates that he is leaving, and as a life-long Leeds supporter, Headingley looks like the only viable option.
InMichael Korkidas
This one came out of left-field when first rumoured, but it makes sense. He's the right price, a team player, and can do us a job.
OutRyan Bailey
Ryans departure looked pretty certain after an alleged fallout with Tony Smith. His departure makes no sense for the Rhinos, and his re-appearance after his bout of 'mumps' may signal that he is back in favour. I hope he stays.
InLesley Vainikolo
Big Les has a new deal at Odsal, but that is not to say that Bradford won't look to offload one oftheir high earners to halt their cash crises. This one is most likely if there is a big financial settlement against Bradford in the Harris case.
InDarrell Griffin
Another potential steal from Wakefield, although not as strongly rumoured as fellow front rower Korkidas. Another one that would fit in with the Hetherington buying policy.
InPaul King
I don't know about this. We were linked with King a couple of seasons ago, but he decided that he wanted to stay with his 'drinking mates'. Outside chance.
InStuart Fielden
More wishful thinking than based on any fact. Fielden would be a fantastic acquisition for the Rhinos, but this lad is destined to ply his trade in Australia when his current contract ends.
InAdrian Morley
A nice idea, but its not going to happen. Moz would break the Headingley salary structure, and is unlikely to be willing to leave the Roosters. Someday...perhaps.
InIestyn Harris
Another rumour doing the rounds is the return of the phony Welshman as part of the legal wranglings. I don't believe that this could work for either Harris or Hetherington and it would disrupt the Rhinos completely. A no-goer!.

I guess we'll just all have to wait and see! If you have any rumours, preferably with a bit of substantiation, then please let me have them.
