Rhinos Rattle Up Third 'Nilling'
Posted by southstander on August 08 2005 - 13:51:31

It will have escaped few peoples attention that the Rhinos went through the 1,000 points in twenty-three rounds of Superleague when they hammered Leigh Centurions this weekend. All credit to a sensational Rhinos defence who have this season averaged over forty-four points per game, whilst conceeding just under sixteen.

What might have escaped your notice is the Rhinos defensive effort, which at eighty minutes on sunday saw the Rhinos having played two solid hours of top class rugby without conceeding a single point!

I took a look back over the Rhinos record this seaosn and found that we have kept clean sheets in an amazing fifteen halves of rugby in league and cup. With twenty-six games completed, that is approaching 30% of the halves that we've played in.

We seem to keep the opposition out best in the second half, with eleven of our shut-outs being then. We've also managed an amazing three 'nillings' of the opposition (Wigan, Pia and Leigh) a feat which we also managed three times last season. We all admire the flair in attack, but a massive pat on the back for the lads defensive effort.

Here is our 'nilling' by half record so far this season;

With five games left in the season we're just just 14 points away from beating last years Superleague points haul, and can let in another seventy-six and still have a better defence. We need ninety-five more points to beat the Bulls 2001 record in Superlegue of 1120.

So far it has been a great season, and with us now unable to finish any lower than second, we'll get at least one attempt at the Grand Final from Headingley. It is all shaping up to be another exceptional season.
