rhinoms Superleague XIX Previews - Round 8
Posted by southstander on April 09 2014 - 07:08:35

by rhinoms

After last weeks drama, intrigue and controversy that is the Tetley's Challenge Cup, some normality returns this week with another round of Superleague.

This weekends fixtures, for the most part, would be described as interesting rather than exciting. The only exception being the top of the table encounter between Castleford and St. Helens.

Elsewhere it looks like easy wins for Wigan, Huddersfield, Warrington, Widnes and Leeds with just the Bulls against the Reds being a tough one to call.

We preview the action here.....

After a week off for the Challenge Cup we return to Super League action this week and already we are at the Round Eight stage of the year.

Here are this week’s previews.

FC v. GIANTS

After agonising drop goal defeats cost both teams their Cup place last time out the Coaches will have their teams fired up for this one.

I think the Cup was the best chance of silverware for the visitors so now they will be looking to start their charge towards an top four spot whereas the best the hosts can hope for is a top six finish.

Whilst the Cod Eads will put up a tough battle at home they lack quality in the HB’s and defensively they are vulnerable which the Giants will look to exploit.

A potential battle with both teams hoping to bounce back but the visitors have too much quality to lose this one.

BULLS v. REDS

The hosts will be more settled after their ownership issues seem settled and their CC cruise against Oldham however their squad is still lacking quality and depth.

The Reds arrive after a golden point win but a change at the top as Harris takes charge of his first game after DR Mouthpiece pulled the plug on Nobbys reign.

I don’t see enough in the home side to get the win although they should be competitive against an over-rated big spending Devils.

TIGERS v. SAINTS

It’s 1st v 2nd as the unbeaten League leaders visit the surprise package of the early part of the season.

The Tiggers will be confident at home but the visitors know how to win close games irrespective of who’s missing from their line-up.

It should be a good entertaining game for the T.V cameras but I think the visitors just edge it in terms of quality.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a home win they are certainly capable and are tougher defensively than in recent years but I think the visitors will just have enough.

RHINOS v. WILDCATS

After giving the same opponents an eleven try hiding away in the cup the Blue ‘n’ Amber will be supremely confident when the battered Puddy Cats visit HQ.

Despite 2/3 injuries I don’t see the visitors troubling the Rhinos and if they keep it under a 40 point defeat it will be seen as progress after last week.

The Rhinos have dedicated this “JP day” as the Legend makes his 500th appearance and it would take a miracle for the visitors to spoil the party.

More tries for the hosts and a chance to give the likes of Sutcliffe and maybe a young forward or two more game time.

WOLVES v. HKR

After a hard fought Cup tie this is the second repeat fixture of the W/E with the venue reversed.

The Robins have shown plenty of improvement and ran the Wire very close so will travel west confident of getting the spoils this time around.

The Wolves are getting wins but still don’t look as free flowing as we’ve seen in past seasons.

I don’t think this will be as close as last week as the visitors lack of consistency rears its ugly head.

WARRIORS v. BRONCOS

An unopposed training run for the hosts and another long trip north for a good hiding awaits the Broncos.

DRAGONS v. VIKINGS

The hosts are showing improvement after an awful start to the season but the visitors are playing some very good RL this year.

This could be an entertaining end to end match with both sides capable of scoring points.

I think the hosts improved performances will continue but I doubt it will be enough this week as the confident Vikings take the points.
