rhinoms Superleague XIX Previews - Round 1
Posted by southstander on February 12 2014 - 16:25:42

by rhinoms

Last weekend saw both your resident pundits wearing a little egg on their faces as they both tipped the Warriors to beat the Giants.

Without the likes of O'Loughlin and Charnley the home side never really got started and crashed to an opening day defeat ahead of their departure down under for the World Club Championship.

Will our predictors fare any better this week?

Rhinoms is here to preview the action.

After Wigan and the Giants served up the appetiser last friday night this week the SL season kicks off in full.

There are new signings ,clubs who will struggle and a re-born big spending Salford to keep us entertained over the next 8 months.

Here are this weeks previews.

The game of the round takes place at the HJ on thursday with a new look re-invented ST's first up for Tony Smiths men.

The hosts have moved on OAP's Morley ,Hodgson and Pikey Briers with Asotasi ,Russell and messrs Myler and Ratchford to take up their respective roles.

ST's have revitalised their battered pack with the likes of Beaumont ,Amor and the Monster that is Masoe add in a new 7 they will be desperate to be back challenging for the Trophies.

This could be a cracking game and i expect a hard fought battle but home advantage should just prove to be enough although i think its safe to say both teams will be challengers this year.

Two teams who stuttered through last year without having any real impact or say in the trophy hunt.

For the hosts its all change on the coaching front with a few new signings added as well whereas the visitors will hope their General Dereau will play for most of this year and have also brought in 1 or 2 reinforcements.

I expect a repeat of last years up and down form with 1 or 2 big wins thrown in for the Cod eads and wouldn't be surprised to see another new Coach before the year is out.

The Dragons really need to start firing again they lost far too many home games last year and they also have had to replace Menzies who had a steadying influence when the going got tough although i think they'll be harder to beat this year.

This has upset written all over it ,restless natives and a scrappy affair.

An easy start for the Vikings when the Nags visit.

The hosts will be looking to build on last year and have a say in the top 8 but i doubt they have enough depth or quality.

For the visitors no matter what the sound bites are coming up from their new spiritual home in Barnet they are going down they lack quality ,experience and are going to lose a lot of games this year the only upside is going to be all the youngsters in their squad getting SL experience.

The hosts start their campaign against the GF specialists and they are doing it without their no7 talisman Dobson and go to BR Patterson.

They have recruited but doubts remain as to whether or not they've replaced quality with quality.

For the visitors they are hurting after last years trophy less and lack of Finals they have recruited the 9 most wanted but again whether or not the selection policy will make any difference remains to be seen.

The Blue 'n'Amber have without doubt the best Back line in the SL but they need a strong go forward and quality ball to be as devastating as they look on paper.

A tough battle but the quality they visitors have should be enough to get the spoils.

The big spenders welcome the much poorer Wildcats first up and will see this as the perfect game to lay down a marker and back up all the Chelp from their owner.

The visitors really do the under-dog role as good as if not better than any other team around and will se this as a great chance to upset the odds.

A big turnover of players for both sides points to a scrappy game but 95% of the quality will be wearing red and i expect a home win.

More turmoil ,departures and false promises at the Odslum of nightmares.

Coach Powell has a big task to replace the mercurial "Roger" Chase but he has brought more depth and experience whilst he will no doubt add plenty with his own coaching ability.

For the hosts it's been the usual off pitch off season turmoil we've witnessed over the last 3/4 yrs and as highly as Cummings is rated he has a real pigs ear of a squad at his disposal.

Publicly the host will talk of top 8 ambitions but the reality will be avoiding relegation and another Admin will be seen as a success the Tiggers will be anywhere from 9th to 12th.

The more stable pre-season will give the hillbillies the edge here.
