Boys Against Men

Two Tries
A Rhinos team obliterated by injuries and suspensions travelled to second spot Huddersfield looking to avoid a treble of losses against the Giants. A good travelling support had low expectations but were there to give the youngsters their full support against a side who, on paper, should have been capable of rattling up a cricket score against us.

The Rhinos had a strong wind at their back in the second half, and for long periods made the home side look like they were the ones with the injuries and inexperience, but as the game wore on it was clear that there would be only one winner.

The final scoreline flattered the home side, but they were clearly too strong despite a valiant Leeds effort.

We bring you all of the action here......

Boys Against Men

Leeds, with their fans and a fierce wind at their backs had all the early pressure and it was only solid Giants defence which kept them at bay and the scoresheet blank. The Claret & Gold didn't get into the Rhinos twenty until the game was ten minutes old, but they immediately showed the killer instinct that the Rhinos had been missing down the other end. Leeds were penalised for lifting in the tackle and from the resulting plays the Giants used the ball well and Robinson went through one of Leeds 'recently developed' trademark defensive gaps to score next to the sticks. Brough goaled easily for 0-6.

It took the Rhinos two minutes to get back on level terms, again thanks to the whistle of Silverwood who this time penalised the home side for not being square in the markers. Three tackles into the ensuing six and Sutcliffe muscled over from dummy half giving Zak Hardaker a simple kick for the extras.

The Giants were easing themselves into the game after a shaky start and on the twenty-minute mark Lunt went down the blind side from five metres out to score in the left hand corner against the side with whom he picked up a Grand Final Winners ring. Brough failed to add the two in a swirling wind.

Scorer
Two minutes later and the home side edged further ahead when good offloading saw Murphy cross after receiving a good ball in space from Wardle. Brough kicked this one for 6-16.

On thirty-three the Rhinos got a penalty wide left when Hall was taken out without the ball while reaching for a high kick to the wing. Leeds probed and prodded before a great ball from Keinhorst put Ben Jones-Bishop over in the right corner. BJB improved the angle for Hardaker to collect the extra two.

The scoreline was back at 12-16 and the Rhinos were still in touch....just.

Just before the half-time hooter the Giants struck a fatal blow after good defence had seen them held up over the line. From the next play, back on the ten, Ferres ran the angle from a Brough pass to score. Brough kicked the two for a half time deficit of 12-22.

We weren't out of it, but we'd a second half mountain to climb, into the face of a gale.

It took twenty minutes of the second half before the first points were registered, unfortunately they went to the Giants. Leeds had been forced to drop out and as the home side returned it down the Rhinos blind side the Rhinos defence failed to slide and Cudjoe went through a gap to score. Brough kicked the goal and the game was slipping away at 12-28.

There was some hope on sixty-nine when the Giants were reduced to twelve men after Grix was sin-binned for a professional foul as the Rhinos tried to take advantage of a break with a quick play-the-ball. and three minutes later we made the advantage count as a Burrow break found space and he put Sutcliffe over for his second of the game. Zak goaled for 18-28, but the hope was short-lived.

On seventy-five Brough was the provider as a tired Rhinos defence allowed Lunt over under the sticks for his second.

Midfield General

With a minute left the Giants broke down the middle and with four attackers against the full-back the try was inevitable. Grix, just back from his ten minute rest, scored under the sticks and when Brough slotted over his sixth conversion of the game it registered a comprehensive home victory.

There is no denying the effort that the lads put in today. We kept mistakes to a minimum, tried to be inventive, avoided too many stupid penalties, and dug deep in defence. But this is a Rhinos side in transition....or crisis, depending on which way you look at it. With this many injuries there will be more of these painful losses to come over the coming weeks, but hopefully we can hang on to the top six positions and get most of our key players fit for the all important play-offs.

Who'd bet against us playing the Giants for the fourth time at some point in September....and then the outcome may be different!
