Tired Rhinos Ease Past the Broncos
Posted by southstander on April 12 2013 - 23:13:30

Brace
After an intense three games in eleven days it was always likely that a game against what were perceived as inferior opposition would see a weary looking Rhinos.

McDermott sent out the strongest seventeen he could muster, to give a veneer of respect to the opposition, but you felt that the lads eased back off the throttle and engaged cruise control to overcome a Broncos side who tackled well enough but were devoid of an forward gear.

We bring you all of the action here......

Tired Rhinos Ease Past the Broncos

Despite being named in the nineteen it was always unlikely that Sutcliffe would get his debut. The seventeen sent out by the coach had just one change from last weeks win over the Wolves, Kirke back from injury replacing Richard Moore, who must be wondering what he needs to do to keep his first team spot.

Leeds dominated from the outset, with the Broncos struggling for possession and position. Despite a couple of early scares the visitors managed to keep their line intact until the seventh minute when a McGuire grubber turned the Broncos defence who lost their race with Moon who touched down. Sinfield added the extras for 6-0 and we waited for the floodgates to open, but they held firm.

Quicksilver
The only other score of a pretty dull and defensive first half was a twentieth minute penalty from Sinfield from ten metres after Stokes had penalised the Broncos three times in as many minutes to march the Rhinos downfield. On thirty we should have been over for a second try but after drawing the final defender McGuire failed to put Moon over and died with the ball.

The scoreline didn't reflect the Rhinos dominance but did bear testament to a resolute Broncos defence. We all expected that we'd be able to kick on in the second half.

It took three minutes from the break before we were over for our second try. We opted to run the ball on the last tackle and after some neat passing the ball finally found its way to Joel Moon who went over from close for his second. Sinfield kicked the goal for 14-0, and some breathing space.

Four minutes later and it was game over.

A clearing kick from Sinfield bounced on the Broncos twenty and as Sinfield was clattered well after the ball was kicked, the referee awarded the Leeds penalty deep in Broncos territory. The Rhinos used all six tackles with a pinpoint McGuire grubber being brilliantly grounded by Hardaker with centimetres to spare. Sinfields extras gave us 20-0.

On fifty-five Singleton found a gap to break for thirty metres and after drawing the full-back he passed outside to McGuire we went over under the sticks without being touched. The conversion was the easist of the day for 26-0.

As the Rhinos tired the Broncos got their consolation when Hurst slid over next to the sticks and Witt added the extra two.

Two minutes from the final hooter and the Rhinos got the last score of the game, and the scrappiest.

Brilliant Again

A Sinfield grubber was fumbled by the Broncos defence and picked up by the kicker. He made a couple of paces forward before putting in a bullet pass to Watkins on the wing who stepped past his marker and went over the line to score for 30-6. Sinfield hit the post with the conversion attempt as the hooter sounded a comfortable, but a little disappointing, victory for the Rhinos.

This was a slugfest between two tired sides, neither of which showed any real attacking flair, but both of which mustered some tenacious defence.

Joel Moon had perhaps his best game in Blue & Amber and McGuire seemed to have a part to play in everything. Hardaker is the finished article and must be high on McNamaras' World Club shopping list and is a delight to watch. The forwards; Leuluai, Peacock, Kirke and Achurch did it touch and laid the foundation for the win.

Pretty it most definitely wasn't, but all that really matters at this point in the season is the two points, and staying in contention with those top sides.
