Every weekday morning plenty of top flight rugby league players, including many Leeds Rhinos first teamers, lock into The Alex Simmons Show on Radio Frequency FM. The show airs from 7am till 10am: it's a great start to the day thanks to the DJs' years of experience with pleasing crowds at countless club nights in Leeds. Most of my regular readers will be aware Iím not a morning person but Iíve still managed to enjoy the show thanks to it being uploaded as a podcast every now and again.
Danny McGuire was interviewed by Alex Simmons recently to promote his ten year testimonial at Leeds Rhinos and I thought it was a great piece of entertainment featuring one of the stars currently playing in Super League. The banter between the two was great and I particularly enjoyed the host's musing about the upcoming ladsí holiday abroad featuring several Rhinos stars. They also put a £10 bounty on Phil Clarke's head if anyone chucks a pie in his face. If the Wigan Ultras ever get to know about this then weíre certainly up for an exciting thread here on RLFANS in the coming week.
Sometime during all of this it clicked for the first time that Alex is the guy who could take our sport to a whole new level off the field, because we currently have no-one like him. Just imagine if he had his own rugby league show it would be a welcome addition to the sport which is running out of ideas on how to complement what happens on the field. Iím sure the players will agree that going on a show with Alex Simmons certainly sounds more exciting than going on a show with Stevo, Eddie and Phil Clarke on a Wednesday night. I doubt that this idea will be everyoneís cup of tea, but Alex will appeal more to the younger fans of this sport, and we need that right now.
