Fantastic Fightback Almost Enough
Posted by southstander on August 19 2012 - 15:06:58

Two More
Leeds travelled to the South of France without the two half backs around which they have built their game for the last decade. McGuire and Burrow were both excused the trip due to injuries, McGuires likely to keep him out for the rest of the season, but Burrow with a chance of a return at Wembley next week.

This was probably just the game that we didn't need the week before the first final of the season, compounded by a need to win the game to keep alive our chances of a top four finish.

Oh, and it was boiling.

We bring you all of the action here......

Fantastic Fightback Almost Enough

The bookies gave the Rhinos little chance with one eye on Wembley and two key players missing. From the play in the first twenty-minutes you'd have said that they had it bang on.

Catalans drew first blood in front of a vociferous and partisan crowd. Dureau made the break and found Sa to cross in the corner. Dureau kicked the conversion from the touchline. On thirteen a fast counter attack, with Leon Pryce playing the starring role, saw Dureau over. The Catalans hooker added the extras for 12-0 and Leeds weren't getting a look in.

On twenty-three the Rhinos knocked on in their own twenty and were unable to halt the Dragons onslaught which saw Casty force his way over. Dureau was again accurate with the kick and we'd give the homeside an eighteen point start.

Last try
On thirty-two we finally got on the scoreboard when Watkins found a gap before passing inside to Shaun Lunt to score under the sticks. Sinfield made it 6-18.

Two minutes later and Kirke was penalised for holding down, Dureau accepting the chance to add the two for 6-20.

Right on the stroke of half-time the Rhinos gave themselves a lifeline. Catalans lost the ball and Hardaker made the break before passing to Watkins to score in the corner. Sinfield converted brilliantly from the touchline and the hooter sounded to beckon the sides to the cool of the changing rooms.

We'd not really been in the game, but somehow we were just eight points behind the home side. We were holding out hope of a comeback, the lads seemed to have forgotten next week and were putting their bodies on the line for the two points.

Early in the second half Ryan Bailey got himself on report for a high tackle and within a minute the Dragons had got themselves another try.

A grubber from Dureau appeared to be knocked on by Duport in the act of scoring, but Childs went to the video referee who gave the try, Robinsons pressure on the officials seemed to have worked a treat with a 50-50 going in their favour. Dureau added the extras for 12-26.

On fifty-four Keinhorst knocked-on with the line begging and a Catalans took full advantage with a 40-20 which while the initial six were defended, Leeds lost the ball carrying it out from their own line and in returning the ball Casty crashed through the line and grounded the ball on the line. As Dureau added the extras the score was 12-32 and it looked like it was game over.

The Rhinos then put in a spirited last twenty which almost saw them win the game.

On sixty-five the Dragons were penalised for moving off the mark and Leeds fast hands went to Hall who crashed over in the corner off a Keinhorst pass. Sinfield kicked brilliantly from the touchline for 18-32.

Two minutes later and a Sinfield cross-field kick was caught by a flying Hall who passed inside to Keinhorst who went over for two in two games. Sinfield converted again for 24-32.

5 Goals

On seventy-three we were back within a score at 28-32 after some superb cross-field running and passing sawWard pass through Keinhorsts hands and into the path of Hall who picked up and scored in the corner.

We were right back in the game, and then it was snatched from us by the video referee.

With three minutes left a perfectly placed kick from Dureau to the left corner looked to have been grounded by Jones-Bishop a fraction ahead of Millard. Childs went to the video referee who judged that Millard had got the first touch and the try was awarded. Dureau added the extras for 28-38 but Leeds still didn't give it up.

On seventy-eight Watkins got over the line for his second off a Lunt pass and Sinfield kicked the extras for 34-38.

Leeds finished the game on the attack with a high ball almost taken by Ben Jones-Bishop, but beaten by the hooter and we'd lost a game that we should, and possibly could, have won.

This was an amazing effort from the Rhinos lads, especially when you know they must have had one eye on next week. If we'd been more awake in the opening twenty we would have won the game, but the fightback was nothing short of sensational.

Play like this week and we have an outside chance of confounding the bookies.
