Barrie Cancels Manning Event
Posted by southstander on June 15 2005 - 15:01:00

After much recent debate on this websites' messageboard, Barrie McDermott has withdrawn his support from the 'Bernard Manning Evening' scheduled to be held at the Batley Variety Club in July.

Despite initially accepting the offer of an invitational evening run by the Variety Club, Barrie was conscious that should there be a negative reaction to his involvement, he would withdraw his support from the event.

The event was due to be held on Tuesday 5th July 2005 and was billed as;

'The legend and controversial comedian Mr Bernard Manning will be top of the bill. Mr Malcolm Lord will be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening with a question and answer session with Barrie and Sky TV pundit 'Stevo'. Many stars from the world of Super League will be at the event.

After reading posters comments on the messageboard Barrie has withdrawn his support for the event. Commenting to SouthStander, Barrie gave the reasons for his decision;

'I'd like to thank everyone for their constructive comments with regard to the Bernard Manning night. Everyones opinion is important to me, and I can appreciate peoples concern about myself and the club being associated with this event.

'When I was first offered the testimonial event by Batley Variety Club I thought long and hard about it, but in the end I thought that it might appeal to a different section of my support that previous events had not.

When people took exception to it, my committee questioned the wisdom of agreeing to associate myself and the club with the event, and as a result I have decided to withdraw my support.

'I appreciate everyones continuing support of my testimonial season, and I look forward to seeing you all at my next event.'

Personally I think it's the right decision, and I hope that everyone will now get behind the rest of Barries season. I know that peoples opinions of Barrie are really important to him, and he is concerned that he has upset a number of his fans. He wants as many people to be involved, and get enjoyment out of, his testimonial season.

Keep your eyes peeled on for details of forthcoming events.
